Brainerd Dispatch: News | Brainerd, Minnesota | Brainerd Lakes Area News on brainerddispatch.com
The Central Lakes College Foundation will receive proceeds from the March 26 Melissa Wooden Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser at the Brainerd Eagles Club.
Students in the American Sign Language Club at CLC are coordinating the event. Brainerd High School students are assisting.
A spaghetti dinner and silent auction will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with ages 8 and older paying $7 pre-sale and $8 at the door, ages 4-7 admitted for $5, and children age 3 and younger admitted at no charge.
The Melissa Wooden Scholarship Fund, a permanent endowment, was established in memory of the late Melissa Wooden of Little Falls, who was an instructor in American Sign Language and a victim of a vehicle accident in 2009.
"She was very connected to CLC," said Tanya Hoting Mrazek, ASL instructor. "Melissa spent many years going to Joe Plut's Creative Communication classes every semester, talking about deafness and deaf culture. She subbed for me when I was on maternity leave and spent a ton of time at the ASL Club events and even coming to our classes often to be a deaf mentor to our students."
Wooden had earned a bachelor's degree in graphic arts from Gallaudet University and was earning a second degree from St. Cloud State University when she died. She was completing that degree in art education and was student teaching at Staples Elementary School.
Many silent auction items have been donated. For information visit My Beautiful Butterfly.
The Melissa Wooden Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student who has shown high regard and respect for the deaf community and whose goal is to foster effective cross cultural communication between deaf and hearing people.
Criteria includes cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, must be a second-year American Sign Language student (enrolled in ASL 3 or 4), must be pursuing a deaf studies certificate through CLC and preference may be given to students who are seeking a degree in one of the following professions: interpreting, teaching, graphic arts or performing arts.
