ASL culture great step for campus | The Red and Black
I would like to thank Mary Walker on her article (“Sign Language Community to come next fall: Open to select students,” April 25).
I have a family member who is deaf and I have seen firsthand the struggle it can be.
Most take for granted the fact they can hear and don’t learn to communicate effectively with the deaf or hearing impaired.
Blake teaching me American Sign Language not only enriched my life, but allowed me and him to communicate in an environment where he oftentimes felt left out due to others’ inability or lack of desire to communicate with him.
It truly is a culture onto itself I would encourage anyone to explore and learn from.
I applaud UGA for taking this step.
