Hi Everybody...:)

I am a member of the hearing community trying to get a better understanding of the world for deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Please bear with me if my questions as times seem 'totally naive' - this is a learning curve for me so forgive the 'go slow'.

(1)
Is it true that in the US/UK, you are taught ASL AND BSL? are the two languages considered foreign and apart, or is it considered important that they are both learned equally as well?

(2)
Is it generally considered easier to learn ASL (globally)?

(3)
Do you find it is easier to teach people specific signs for whole words, rather than the alphabet letters to sign a word out in full?

(4)
What resources ARE NOT available to facilitate a more comfortable day to day environment for someone who is deaf/hard of hearing? By this, I do not mean what has not been provided by your local council, but more a case of which areas of technology, social interaction, recreational facilities, traffic systems, eating out etc or where you have thought of an idea that could be developed and integrated to allow you to enjoy that activity as much as a hearing person would.

As a hearing person, I am an outsider and no doubt will never really have a true and full appreciation for the limitations that the hearing world places upon you. We have a small team here who would, with your help like to work towards making some changes...

I look forward to 'hearing' what you have to say.

D
