I am in ASL 1. I love it so much and i want to keep going all the way through college. My ASL teacher(hearing) graduated Gallaudet University, and i really want go there someday too.(unlikely but, hey, i can dream right?). ASL i such a beautiful language and i want learn more about the deaf culture, even through i know a lot already. I just had some questions if it isn't too much time?
1. The deaf community(as a whole) frowns upon the usage of Cochlear implants and hearing aids. If a Deaf person gets one of these devices, are the outcast or shamed within the community?
2. How does a hearing person become an "Honorary Deaf Person"?
3. Is it rude to talk about music with a Deaf Person?
Thank you Much!

1. No.
2. I've never heard of such a thing.
3. Generally no. Depends on the context, I guess.

About 3 and the music....I had a "Cultural Deaf" friend---he swore up and down he was born deaf and was NOT Hard of hearing in the least.

Now I am late deafened, and can't hear music anymore at ALL....I hear squat when music plays.....

So, the Deaf friend would always pop in CD's into his car stereo and I would wonder what the hell??? And when i would ask why he has and plays CD's he would never give an answer. I just found that extremely deceiving and needless to say i am no longer friends with that person anymore!! :)

As far as discussing music---from a Late Deafened perspective, I LOVE talking about music that I remember....I was an 80's teen so anything Madonna, Janet, Whitney, Michael.....(and even Debbie Gibson LOL) I enjoy talking and reminiscing about.

This is just from a Late Deafened perspective...probably different for cultural Deaf i'm sure...but i don't mind talking about music...just don't mention that Lady Gaga person I keep reading about....she's apparantly mega popular but for the life of me, I have NO idea what the hell she sings LOL...but I see her written about everywhere and pictures all over the place.....So i'm guessing her music is good...

All I can offer on the bolded part is that I am profoundly deaf, have been since birth. Yet my HAs enable me to hear music - I will not understand the lyrics unless I know them upfront, but even without knowing the lyrics, I can really hear the beat, pitches, the vocals, instrumental, etc. So I am forever playing music CDs myself. I don't think he meant to be disrespectful to you.

Are you a time traveler from the past?
2. How does a hearing person become an "Honorary Deaf Person"?

Born into a deaf family???

3. Is it rude to talk about music with a Deaf Person?

Terribly. I become violent if it is ever mentioned in my presence.
