Artist To Exhibit In Aid Of Deaf Association (from This is Hampshire)

A DEAF artist from Sparsholt is getting ready to exhibit her work in her home city.

Donna Vokes, 24, is organising a solo exhibition at the Slug and Lettuce pub in The Square, Winchester, which hosts monthly artwork shows.

It opens on Thursday, November 1, and proceeds from the night will go to the Hampshire Deaf Association.

But it will not be an ordinary opening night. Miss Vokes is currently working on a painting called "Choose your Face", made up of nine A3 panels, each baring a face.

On the night, customers will be able to help raise cash by buying their "face" for £10 and signing it.

The finished painting will be hung at the association's offices for all to enjoy.

On the night, people will also be able to try creating their own artwork or taking part in some games, all for the good cause.

Louise Akers, manager of the Slug and Lettuce, said: "We love supporting local artists here and have exhibitions running all of the time.

"There will be lots of things for customers to get involved in through out the evening including games and quizzes.

"Staff are learning some signs too, so they can communicate using sign language to the customers."

Miss Vokes, who went to Henry Beaufort School, has also launched her own company to kick-start her career as a creative artist, having returned to the UK after some extensive travelling.

She said: "My mother introduced me to a world of art and colour, showing me how to draw and paint - although she meant on paper rather than the wall!"

Miss Vokes studied fine art at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design University College and finished in 2005 with three distinctions.

It was then that she followed in the family footsteps to emigrate to Australia - even though the last footsteps were trod almost 50 years ago.

She added: "I returned to the UK in 2006, intending to stay only a month, but instead I got the urge to chase and complete a bigger dream. This one was to kick start my career as a creative artist and set up my own business."
