Arkansas School for The Deaf Parents and Teachers Rally at Capitol
About 185 parents, teachers, students, alumni and supporters of the Arkansas School for the Deaf rallied at the state capitol Monday afternoon.
They're demanding a meeting in the near future with their school board. They want to discuss "on-going issues" with their superintendent, Dr. Marcella Dalla Rosa.
"We are very frustrated. We didn't think it would come to this point. We were hoping to have some sort of resolution within the school," teacher Jessica Trotter said through an intrepreter.
At the last two board meetings, the board has refused to discuss Dr. Dalla Rosa. The teachers have 159 signatures to petition the board for a specially set meeting to talk about the superintendent.
The teachers and their attorneys met with Marc Harrison, the ASD and ASB liasion to the governor.
Their attorney, Lea Ellen Fowler, wrote a memo to board chairman Pam Hyneman requesting a special meeting. Hyneman requested that the Attorney General's office respond to Fowler. In the response, Mandy Abernethy writes that "the Board had begun the process of scheduling a meeting to discuss an appropriate method for receiving concerns regarding the superintendent." It goes on to say, "If the Board decides to hear input on this issue, they will issue guidance on the process they intend to follow."
