Are there any popular FPS games out for PC?

I want to play a FPS game where there are active players in multi-player mode and have fun playing the game until CS:GO/Black Ops 2 comes out.

Looking to pick up Battlefield 3 or MW3 but I heard both games are losing their popularity.

TF2 is boring and repetitive.

Currently playing Diablo 3 and Dota 2 but both games take up too much of my time.

Any recommendations?
 
This might help you determine which games are still very active, it's Steam's stats for the number of players:

It doesn't take into account stuff that's not on Steam (like BF3) but EA have just turned their milking machine onto full power with BF3 so I'd avoid it. Unless you love DLC, DLC, DLC, stay away.

Based on the numbers, Left4Dead? The only PC FPS I have right now is Red Orchestra 2, and it's only just clinging to life after one of the worst launches in recent memory.
