I live in Illinois and I was wondering if there are any deaf mentor programs out there. I am hearing an my son is profoundly deaf. We both are in need of some mentoring. If anyone knows of such a thing, please let me know....
Thanks :ty:

Sorry off the point, but no - I never went to ISD but do know some friends that might have went there! Even made more friends at NTID who were from ISD too..

Yes I'm from Illinois, not quite so far from Chicago! I tend to go there all the time throughout my childhood and now since that I moved back here from New York, I'm planning on taking lots of trips to Chicago!

Glad to know that we all can help you with finding resources for you and your son. How did your son become deaf? What kind of program is he attending now in school?

he became deaf from menengitis when he was 18 months old. He is in mainstream school that has special classes for the deaf kids and he attends a couple of mainstream classes during the day. Like Art and PE.

Wow! That sounded like me! I encountered menengitis at 11 months old and became deaf from there on. I attended mainstreamed school all my life, attended classes with other deaf students until I was in 1st grade where I was with other hearing students in every subject. What was the challenge of raising a deaf kid?

You mean what IS the challange. He is only 10 so there is lots of raising left to do. Right now the challange is communication. He is learning language skills (including sign) at a pretty slow pace. I too am struggling to learn ASL. It's hard (for me) to learn a new language at my age. I will continue to learn because I refuse to isolate my child from my life due to lack of communication. So the challanges are many. One of the reasons I am looking for deaf mentors or even just deaf adults in my area, is not only to make some new friends, but to have someone that can help mentor us through some of the challanges we face.
