News from Total Catholic
The Archbishop of Liverpool Patrick Kelly has returned from a trip to the United States where he opened a new office of the International Catholic Foundation for the Service of Deaf Persons (ICFSDP).
The archbishop, who has learnt how to sign for the deaf and has signed the homily at Mass, is the president of the ICFSDP, which has its roots in Britain.
To mark the opening of its new offices in Washington DC, he celebrated Mass with the organisation’s board and the local deaf community last Sunday.
As part of the celebrations, American Bishop Martin Holley, Auxiliary Bishop of
Washington and the ICFSDP representative for the US Bishops’ Conference, led a concelebration with several deaf and hearing priests who work internationally with the deaf community.
These included a priest from Southwark Archdiocese, Fr Peter McDonough, who travelled especially for the occasion. Fr McDonough is profoundly deaf himself and is a member of the ICFSDP board.
Peter Heneghan, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Liverpool, said: “The pastoral care for the deaf in England and Wales has traditionally been assigned to the bishop of Salford.
“Archbishop Kelly first got involved in ministry to the deaf when he was still bishop of Salford and has been involved ever since.”
The task of the ICFSDP is to support and promote the religious formation and pastoral care of, with and by deaf people within the Catholic community.
