Appropriations Committee says keep school for deaf
A legislative committee has decided that the South Dakota School for the Deaf should continue to operate in Sioux Falls, at least for now.
The Joint Appropriations Committee says more study is needed before any major changes are made at the school.
Gov. Mike Rounds recommended closing the campus in Sioux Falls and providing the same services in other ways, such as outreach programs.
Rep. Tom Deadrick of Platte says state education officials must study the school in more detail before changes are made. He says the school cannot continue just as it is, but changes cannot be made too quickly.
Hope Scranton Deaf school will win this battle too.
