AN 11-year-old schoolgirl whose lessons have been ruined by the theft of her teaching deaf-aid has appealed for its safe return.

The transmitter, a crucial piece of equipment costing more than £3,000, was stolen in a break-in at West Wight Middle School, Freshwater, over the Christmas holiday.

The school had hoped by making a local appeal it would be returned but sought wider publicity after that failed and Christine Dench continued to find lessons almost impossible.

Headteacher Lesley-Ann Bryant said: "The transmitter, which is a small box worn on a strap by the teacher, sends a signal to Christine's receiver. This amplifies what is being said so she can hear lessons through her digital hearing aids. Without it, all that Christine can hear is a confusing hubbub of noise.
"She simply cannot hear lessons, which is very distressing for her and for everyone else.

"I am sure whoever took this cannot know the effect the theft has had on Christine or on her teacher, Helen Foster, who has helped her so much.
"The sad thing is the transmitter is useless to anyone else but so valuable to Christine and we would appeal for its return or for anyone who knows anything about it to help us."

Christine's mum, Sue Bryan, from Sunset Close, Freshwater, said: "Since she got the equipment two-and-a-half years ago, it made all the difference to my daughter's learning.

"Now it makes me weep to think of her struggling so hard in class to understand lessons and it is so difficult for the teachers, too, who have to make real efforts for my daughter in a class of 30 or so pupils.

"My daughter has been marvellous in the way she has tried to cope and the school has been fantastic in making her their star of the week for the effort she has put in.

"It is particularly hard that this vital piece of equipment has probably just been thrown away when my daughter needs it so much and when any replacement we might be lucky enough to get could take a long time to arrive.

"I appeal to people, who I am sure cannot have known how important this equipment is, to find a way of returning it.

"I am sure it could be left somewhere safe and that I or the school could be told where that is."
