Anyone Ubuntu Linux Lovers??!!

I'm looking for any deafie who are currently using Ubuntu and love to do challenge and fun. I Do not have any friends Locally who uses Linux. Few are just too noob for linux and are lazy or too busy to take challenge. :roll::popcorn:

I'm already in Compiz-Fusion (eyecandy) desktop with Kiba dock (I stopped using it cuz I can't chase icon to run program!!) and screenlets installed and would like to add more.. I've done with printer and file sharing networking with Windoz box. I just wanted someone who are as good as I am or better that will give me challenge to work on Linux. I really want to learn how to configure, make, and install ect. I can't get it working cuz I'm missing something on that except for copying and pasting it off from Linux website in order to get apps installed and working. I want to learn hacks and trick on Linux. I also wanted to learn how to do programming such as GNU, Python ect.. to create my own program. I'm just getting out of "noOb" group. LOL

I'm a member of Ubuntu Forum and my SN is Purplecatty (as usual!!!). I would Love to get in touch with any Deafie. Anyone in member of Ubuntu forum?:wave::wave:

PS: Don't get with me on iMac or Windoz! :pissed:

I do use Ubuntu Linux; It was a server edition, i.e., it didn't have a gui like KDE or Gnome. I installed it on my laptop so I could use it as a test LAMP server for my webdev needs. It truly was a breeze to use and a joy to work with!

LAMP server? what's that?

My tuxbox is currently a Print and File server now. I am using Gnome. Personally, I love KDE because it had everything in it. BUT they're still have bugs. I"ve use KDE last summer using Feisty Fawn. It worked nicely until I screwed up something in Ubuntu and I couldn't get in KDE but got in Gnome w/ error messsage. So I gave up and reformatted it and re-install Ubuntu.. Until October, I finally upgraded to Gusty Gibbon. It seem a little different plus Compiz-Fusion w/ Eyecandy options. Loving it!

Basically, its a software solution that allows you to host a web server on your computer instead of having your web content hosted with a provider like GoDaddy.
L = Linux
A = Apache Web Server
M = MySQL database
P = PHP processing language
= LAMP server.

And yes, you could use it as a print/file server, or any other Linux service you want running, but without the GUI overhead. Ubuntu really is responsive and is more than up to the task running server processes. Having a GUI in there really slows it all down.

Anyway, I use a LAMP server to host my web content for testing purposes. I could use it as a web server if I had a static IP connection. But, that approach costs $$$, and I can simply transfer my web content to a web service provider like GoDaddy for far less. This way, I can test, refine, blowup, etc. all my web stuff locally, and when it's all 'ready', I transfer the whole thing to my web server.
 
I've tried Ubuntu, and while I hugely agree that it's a great option for casual users, I found it excessively frustrating to do all the tweaking I needed to set up braille how _I_ wanted it. There's just too much user-cuddling going around. Hah, maybe I'm just a masochist who likes to do things the painful way. (3 day installs ftw.)

Thanks for info!! That's something new. I've tried Smoothwall (firewall linux) and set it up and take out monitor and forget it. Using IP address to access Smoothwall box. I've done that but there were some issue I had with it so I decided to reformat and install and run Headless printserver. It didn't last long cuz the CPU itself crashed on it's own (It was an old 700mhz HP CPU w/ crappy power supply). I realized that the HP system was really crappy. If I had $$ to spend, I would get network printer to cut down all those headache so that I can put Ubuntu box to sleep to save power.

I am thinking about getting 8GB flash drive from Microcenter to turn it into "hard drive" for Ubuntu so I don't have to worry about hard drive failure. I just simply want to leave it on and forget it except power outage LOL.

Just installed Ubuntu Server Edition v7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) onto my laptop. It was a cinch to install, and went smoothly w/o any problems. If you're curious, you can check this page out; it pretty much mirrors what I went through in setting up a LAMP server onto my laptop.

As you can see, it is definitely not for the faint of heart! Hardcore Linux gurus need only apply! :D My gripe is that the installation didn't install a FTP server. :( I would have liked to use it for my Dreamweaver usage. Maybe I can find a suitable substitute within Dreamweaver. Otherwise, I'm gonna have to install it into the LAMP laptop! ;)

Nice! I noticed it is installed thru VMware (virtualmachine). I'll give it a try on Virtualbox lol.

I just got Doom 2 running, one of my favorite classic game. Then got ZDoom installed, works great. Now I am looking for a Frontend to load wads and such.

I miss ZDameon, I tried to get the Linux version working, but it won't login. No way I am installing Wine (windows emulator) on account of security reason, Wine is just as sceptable(s?) to viruses and hacks just as WIndows can. So I'm waiting to see if someone can write a Native code to make a ZDameon version for Doom so I can connect to a server and play with other Doomers.

I tried to install Myst's URU in Wine. It just simply won't run. (WineHQ claims that it'll runs URU, Myst Exile ect) It requires tweaking before you get it working. Cedgena would works just fine but requires monthly payment of $5 for support. I woud LOVE to download and use it but not right now. I'm not worrying about Wine getting hacked. As long as you have firewall for Ubuntu, it'll be least of your worry.

I am able to run older windows games through Wine (any software more than 4 to 10 years old). It seem that Wine is lagging years behind on most softwares. I ran Virtualbox and able to install XP but can't run URU under that.. It can't run because it can't find "debugger". Not surprising that I did download and use cracked copy of VMware on my XP laptop and installed XP inside XP and ran same game with no problem. Am I missing somthing in Linux?

Me was ponderin' where have I seen that name "purplecatty"? It was you on Ubuntu Forum! I too yam runnin' Ubuntu (on MacBook). Gutsy 64-bit gave me issues, 32-bit ran smoothly. Tried Hardy in both 64 and 32-bits, not so boot-friendly. Then tried upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04, after some restarts... issues came up. Wasn't happy with the results. Best to just use 7.10 on MacBook.

My first hand-on was SuSE back in '99. I loved Madrake. Last I use was Fedora Core 3. After new versions, I got fed up and simply gave up. Been with M$ fer 17 years. I was one of the beta testers for Vista several months before they released. Me spent $4K on hardware upgrades findin' that's compatible fer Vista. After I got that up and runnin', I saw software & security issues. This is where it ends. Made a switch to Mac last year.

Up til recently two months ago, gave Ubuntu 7.10 a try. They have already proved and I yam happy to git back with Linux. Lookin' ferward to build a PC from scratch again fer FULL-TIME Ubuntu, of frikkin' course, with Compiz Fusion and many more.

Hey Catty, you still have that Shockwave issue? It werks fer me on my end without Wine.
 
Count me in. Another Ubuntu lover here. Seriously I'm about to :rifle: Windoz when I installed the new AVG 8.0 Free and after cleaning my PC with CCleaner or other software, it fucked my Pc up, trying to reinstall AVG again. WTF? it won't finalize the installation. Well I removed it and install yet another AV program. It's called Avira Antivir. Seems to work fine...at least for now. To tell the truth, i don't like Windoz and i'm freaking tired of it. While Ubuntu require no AV program. So i'm still dual booting between Win and Ubuntu. So It may be the end of Windows for me,

LOL. Sheesh Windoz is a pieces of crap. It's a virus magnet. That's why I go for Ubuntu. My Ubuntu box is down due to defective BIOS and crappy graphic card (my son begged me to give him ATI 9000 PRO 128mb graphic card. I let him have it and I use Nvidia GeForce2 MX400 PCI. It runs real crappy on Hardy Heron that I recently installed last week. Now, it won't boot to Ubuntu and shown "drives not detected". Oh no! I had to reset the BIOS. My cat rubbed and zapped the ABIT AV8 IDE ribbon last winter. That was the cause. It runs fine after resetting BIOS. I reflashed BIOS and solve problem for a month or so but now it's baaackk. Mobo tend to get locked up a week after running 24/7 cuz of crippled BIOS. I was seriously thinking about replacing AMD64 939 mobo (transfer AMD64 2.2 Ghz Venice Core and rest of hardwares) and get rid of ABIT AV8 board. I plan to get one with PCI-E Cuz everythiing are cheaper than my AV8 w/ AGP and DDR (NOT DDR2) :pissed:

I didn't missed it. I did use 32bit version Ubuntu on AMD64. Because Firefox, and some programs had bugs on 64bit version. I already installed 64bit Ubuntu Feisty Fawn last year and Firefox were unable to install and run flashplayer. Some program won't work too so I switched back to 32bit. I read those issue.

As for my ABIT mobo that I mentioned previously. It works fine and dandy on Hardy Heron. It's the BIOS crashed on me. It happened before when it had Gusty. Problem started during winter and plenty of static electricity and dry air, My cat is a capacitor of static electric and even it was in basment without carpet. It zaps anything it touches or rubbed. So it rubbed on my IDE cable and it zapped cable and screwed the IDE chipset and BIOS got screwed too.. (I left the CPU cover open, my bad!). So It's my fault tho. Still works by resetting crippled BIOS tho.

I will try run Shockwave player on Ubuntu when I get new graphic card tho.
