Anyone here drive a Jeep Liberty??

SMH!!!! It is BAD idea trying to run part time 4x4 on ice! It will THROW you out no matter what! Nothing beats ice!

I hate to say this, but Im sure Neo would be thrilled to hear this...

Probably Subby (subaru) would be best choice since they are AWD, big difference than part time 4 wheel drive.

If gas cost is in your mind, I'd opt for Honda accord or Civic as they both have front wheel drive which helps a bit.

Again, there is almost nothing that beats ice! Ice is almost always winner.

Anyway, ALL Jeeps got 4x4, the 2 wheel drive is just option! You won't see many Jeep with just 2 wheel drive, they are just joke for Jeep! None of Wrangler got 2 wheel drive.

Eh eh, I agree about that leather part. I warned one of my friend NOT to buy with leaher, he didn't believe me and bought one. few years later, he REGRET big time! Yes, he actually walks up to me and told me that I was right about leather. I never own any vehicle with leather, I stay away from them.

The best and cheapest investment when it comes to battling the ice is to get decent tires, especially snow tires. What I found out about snow tires is that they stay soft when it gets bbbbrrr cold, while all season tires gets stiffed when gets cold, and finally if you can find vehicle with ABS (Anti-Locking Braking system), preferred 4 wheel ABS. They are good at steering on icy pavement.

I would rather have a truck such as a Dodge Ram Quadcab but thats out of my budget range for right now plus I need something thats gets good gas mileage as I plan on going back to school for a 2 year degree/certificate once I get it paid off and I will be putting alot of miles on it during that time. Then continue to drive it for a couple more years then use it to trade up to something I really want later on given I have no wrecks and I baby it really well.

The reason I want 4 WD option is so that I can go up and down the driveway safely when it ices over during ice storms in the winter. Its not so much the snow, its the ice that scares me. Because I live in extremely rural area and we only see snow once or twice a year we have no snow plows. I have thought about purchasing road chains for when it does get icy. I hate being stuck when the weather gets bad.

Does the Sport Liberty have 4 WD option? I would rather have cloth seats, leather is too much trouble plus within a few years it dries out cracks and looks like crap.

The only thing is that I need something bigger than a car because I tend to haul alot of dog stuff in the back as I train waterfowling dogs on the side as a second job plus I would probaby find myself going to some sort of mud bog sooner or later with all the Hunt Tests and Field Trials I go to.

Oh, now makes ALOT sense why you wanted Jeep Liberty... I would advise go for 4 wheel ABS. 4 wheel drive is only good as get you moving, but not braking. You want to have excellent braking system for icy conditioned roads.

Im bitty disappointed that 2007 is last model year for Liberty with THAT design, now 2008 Liberty is much like Dodge Nitro... not happy about it.

Yeah, what's with that?

Just my opinion:

I used to think I would never like leather seats. But our Durango had leather seats, and I loved them! We had the heated seats, so it was very nice for cold weather. They never cracked or changed color. I think the newer cars have improved their leather seat covers.

My daughter's minivan has leather seats, and she loves them. Even with her two wild boys the seats have held up very well. No cracks.

Our Jeep Commander has heated leather seats. We haven't had it too long, so I can't say how well they will hold up. So far, so good. A friend of ours, a body shop owner, looked at our Jeep and commented that he was very impressed with the quality leather that was used on the seats.

Of course, that's personal preference. :)

Many of the new fabrics are very durable now, too.

If you're buying a used vehicle, you can see and judge the condition of the seats, and decide whether or not that is acceptable to you.

the older models before 2007 are gas guzzlers!!!!! be wary of gas prices if you gonna use it very often or long trips..

Why don't you call your car insurance to see how much it's gonna be as everyone is different based on their driving record, age and so on.. so you can't judge on it from someone else's car insurance how much you will be paying...

dang I want a TJ just for the summer and fun.. lol.. smile any volunteers to buy me one?? lol

you could look into those sport trac where there's four doors ... there's alot of new ones coming out not just liberty for rough road driving..

get a pick up truck with four doors and get a cap put on the back for dogs with windows or take the cap off when not needed.. just a suggestion...

Canuck Chick-

I really do want a Dodge Ram Quadcab (4-dr style) but it is out of my price range. I have also looked into the SportTracs and I have not found one here locally yet that is in my price range. I plan on making a $1,000 downpayment and getting the monthly payments around $200-$250 over a 3-4 year period.

I know I am needing a very functional vehicle that is hard to find, and I know I am going to have to give up either good gas mileage or 4 wheel drive option or both before I settle on something I think will work for me for the next 5-6 years.

As for leather seats, the SUV I currently drive is a hand me down from my parents and when I got it the seats were blown. The drivers seat looks awful where my dad has rubbed his big butt over it getting in and out and tore it all apart. I would much prefer cloth knowing how leather will look in 10 years on a vehicle. For me leather seats is a waste of money. If you ever want to get a good selling price on a vehicle with leather seats, you need to pay thousands to get them reupholstered so that it looks new and someone will pay good money for the leather that doesnt know any better.

REally do want a Rodge Ram Quadcab with a matching cap over the back, but again it is sadly out of my price range right now. :(

Well. 4x4 and Two wheels are same for ICE. AWD is very good for control but won't work for brake like 4x4 or FWD. That's all you need to learn how to pump the brake panel to smooth. No matter.. That's all you need studded tires for ice. My friend use studded tires for ice race and it really work great.

Winter Tech - Metal Studs For Winter Tires
It's work great for ice only, NOT ROADS.

Dodge RAM is eat lot gas than other truck that's I know. What's about Chevy? GMC? Toyota? Honda?

Yup, that is why I recommended 4 wheel ABS as they are better handling over ice... They aren't 100% perfectly handling on ICE however far better than without ABS.

That is what I have! Man! I had blast time in the mud, and my co worker rode with me, and decided to ask friend who got Ford F-150 with 4x4, guess what? That ford has to call somebody to pull out!

TJ is nice but expect them to ask you too much for gas!

I am still leaning towards the Jeep Liberty. And hopefully in a couple of months I will have enough saved up and I may go to the Car Wars in LR to see if I can get a good deal on one. Ive also been looking at the local ads alot to see what they are currently going for used based on year model and mileage on the vehicle.
I also noticed that the Grand Cherokees are fairly cheap when used, but I have no idea if their gas mileages suck or not. I just need to do alot of homework and test driving once I get the bills paid down and I have a down payment saved up.

Why don't ya test drive on those three...Liberty, Grand, and regluar Cherokee. And see what you really like the best for you. :) We stick with "Jeep". I do own Cherokee and gas isn't that bad...I fill up about 300 to 325 miles to fill up. (on HWY sure save extra if you go on long trip and use cruise control, but I don't remember how much I fill up from how many miles. But I will soon since we'll be going out of town couple of times) Be sure to find 4.0 on Jeep Cherokee (don't get 2.1L I think, it will cause too many problems, not worth it to shell out your money for repairs)

GOOD LUCK!!! And have fun looking around what you wanted!

Grand Cherokee, gas? Depending on which engine, they got 4.0L to huge powerhouse 5.8L which is real gas guzzler. If you try Grand Cherokee with 5.8L High Output engine. You wont believe how much power it has... will get you dart out very fast! But you'd be dumping more gas.
I would recommend used rather than new like 2 to 4 years old that way, you don't lose much of huge depreciation for the first 2 years.

I definitely will not be buying new - all of my lookings have been under the used car sections. With new cars as soon as you drive it off the lot, its already lost $1,000 in depreciation. With used it still depreciates but at a much slower rate.

I am looking into the 01-03 year models. I currently drive a 92 Ford Explorer 4DR 2WD Eddie Bauer Leather Seats and a busted A/C.
