I read someone's comment on the pledge here. Seebs is a Christian man who thinks that the pledge should not be said in schools because kids are not old enough to legally make oaths or enter contracts. That makes the pledge an empty oath done by routine when it should be said by people old enough to understand what it really means serve a country. He thinks that makes it a false oath and since the word God is in the currently used version of the pledge, it's a blasphemy. He also says that kids honest enough to have a different opinion on the pledge rather than mindlessly saying it are looked down upon. So, Seebs suggests not forcing kids to say the pledge. I say let them say it once they are old enough and understand it and say it becaue they want to because it would be more meaningful to them.
He also notes that it says "I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands." Since the allegiance is pledged to both the country and the flag because of the word and, it's idolatry of the flag. He also cites James 5:12 that prohibts swearing oaths. He also says Christians can't give unconditional allegiance to earthly things like countries and flags. For those reasons, Seebs thinks Christians should not say the pledge.
Seebs also says that the words under god was added during the McCarthy times and that it makes the pledge self-contradictionary. It happens because the pledge says that the nation is indivisible, but the under god phrase divides Americans into believers and nonbelievers, therefore making the nation divisble. Because of that, he thinks nobody should say it.
If we want to express our support for the country, we should find a better way. I think we should be free to choose how to express our support instead of being forced into one way only.
I learned the pledge in elementary school and didn't really know what it meant. In high school, a teacher told us that we didn't have to say it if we didn't want to. Sometimes, I would not say it because I was busy with classwork. I think doing classwork and learning helps the country better than an empty oath because educated people can do a lot for the country.
What do you think of this opinion on the pledge?
