I don't even have cable nor a TV, and I rarely go out. You have to understand that things aren't always cheaper here, especially if you shop at places like REI. There, this jacket for $250 would seem cheaper in California relative to Texas. Remember that a retail person making $12-15 in CA doesn't necessarily make the same amount in Texas. There would be a drastic pay cut involved.

I have North Face coat that I paid $150 at Tyson Center in NoVA.
 
Back to the topic; it is cheaper to buy a house than rent, but you must have a good credit score to get approved from the mortgage, or you are stuck with high monthly payment for apartment/house rentals with higher down payment (only if your credit is fair / poor).

There is no win-win situation for million of Americans with fair/poor credit scores.
