American School For The Deaf | Hartford Business
Mission: The American School for the Deaf serves the deaf and hard of hearing community as a multifaceted innovative institution dedicated to the development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life, producing educated and self-directed citizens.
Background: Founded in 1817, ASD is the nation’s first special education school and the leader in providing comprehensive education, programs and services for deaf and hard-of-hearing people from birth through adulthood. It is the only school in Connecticut exclusively devoted to serving deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, their families, and the organizations and institutions that serve them. Through its programs and services, ASD enables deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens of all ages to lead rich, productive lives as participating, contributing members of society.
The American School for the Deaf offers deaf and hard of hearing students ages 3 to 21 a full range of educational programming from preschool through grade 12.
Classrooms are arranged so that students are able to clearly see their teachers and peers at all times. Classes in language, art, science, mathematics, drama and sports are interposed with career exploration and an array of extracurricular activities and clubs. In this environment, new interests are discovered, skills are developed and confidence grows.
Currently, we serve approximately 200 children on campus. We serve approximately 60 families in our Birth-to-Three program, and about 80 adult vocational clients.
Additionally, we provide outreach services for about 50 children in their home school districts.
Major Fundraiser: Our annual golf tournament is our primary fundraiser. This year’s tournament -- our 32nd -- was held on May 15 at Blue Fox Run Golf Course in Avon. Typically, approximately 200 participate.
Volunteer Needs: Those interested in volunteering should contact Marilyn Rettig, director of institutional advancement, at (860) 570-2353.
