Hello everyone!!

My name is Stephanie! I am a 23 year old hearing student at CUNY Hunter College. I live on the North Shore of Long Island in New York. Here's a little background information:

I first was introduced to ASL in 5th grade. A Deaf girl in the grade below me had an interpreter who started a Deaf Club where I basically just learned the alphabet and had my first ASL lesson! A few years later I took a class at the Helen Keller National Center. This class was in the evening and had mostly adult couples where one person was Deaf or HoH and the other was hearing and wanted to learn ASL. I was only 14 at the time so I was a little uncomfortable because there was no one my age and eventually stopped going.

In High School I took ASL my senior year and got the Senior Aware for Excellence in ASL! (Except there were only 2 seniors taking ASL haha). When I went to community college I majored in ASL and got my AA - this involved taking ASL levels 1-4 and a Deaf Culture class. We went on a trip to Gallaudet which was really awesome.

Since then I (sadly) have not been able to use my ASL very much. I don't have any friends who know ASL so when you can't practice a language skill it is easy to lose it. Now I am finishing up my BA degree at CUNY Hunter in NYC and I just registered to take an adult education class at LaGuardia Community College. I was screened and told that I am able to start at a level 4 ASL class! I am so excited about it, it starts in April.

I am really involved with an organization called Youth For Christ and they have a club that is specifically for Deaf students called "Deaf Teen Quest". Unfortunately, we don't have one on Long Island! I think that becoming an interpreter would be a profession I would really enjoy (I love languages in general!) and is something I could use as a ministry too!

So that's kind of a summary of my background with ASL! Feel free to ask me any questions!!

Looking forward to meeting everyone here!

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. This is a very good introduction. Whatever or whenever you feel the urge like talking about God or religion, would you please try to refrain from saying about God as we, Deafies, HOHs (Hard Of Hearing) and Hearings have many different religions. Thank you :)ty:).

Enjoy reading and posting all the threads here. See you around here.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

@Bebonang, when I said "we" I was referring to the people who work for Youth For Christ, not to the entire Deaf community! I would never assume that everyone has the same beliefs as I do. Thanks for pointing that out though because I definitely don't want to be misunderstood!! :)

Also you should know religious discussion is not allowed at Alldeaf.

Because we are all from different religions. We got debated in heated discussions in the religion forum and got some of us banned or locked the thread. So it was not good to get out of hand when we debated. So Alex, the Administrator of AllDeaf, decided to omit the religion forum out. So we are careful not to discuss about religion, but there are times we want to discuss some a little bit. It was not easy but that is something we need to learn to refrain us from using the religion. Okay? :hmm:

Yeah I understand that. I misunderstood I think, I felt like I was being told I couldn't even mention what I believe in - but in this case it's relevant because it is part of the reason why I became a part of this site!

Anyway - thanks again everyone for the welcome! :)
