AIM Tools

i attempted but i wasn't sure what it would entail to, i didn t want to add on something that could have been impersonal, whilist i use regular good old away message that helps me more so poeple will know where i am at all times :)

You have to sign up to be able to use it. I like it bec sometimes I am not online but need to send a message to someone, and they get my message even though I am still offline. It's cool!

I prefer not to use beta versions. Would like to use final versions.
Besides, I have no reason to hide from anyone, and whoever aren't on my list can't see me online. That's good enough for me.

The lock by your screenname isn't JUST a lock, it's to enable security features on AIM. However, AIMEncrypt.com's certificate or any other that anyone can download is a very insecure way to do encryption in AIM. Knowing the internals of public-key cryptography, everyone with the same key really isn't secure. You can do encryption with OpenSSL securely instead.

Creating certificates with OpenSSL on Linux/Unix platforms are quite easy. But if you're using Windows, not all hope is lost. I've looked everywhere for instructions to create your own self-signed certificate, and since there isn't really a page out there that did it, I wrote my own.

Here are some instructions to create your own self-signed certificate for AIM. You don't need anything special, I put up the binary that allows you to do it with OpenSSL. You can use any OpenSSL binary, I provide instructions on how to use your own binary as well. If the instructions scare you, there is a program (SSCC) provided that can do it all for you. It asks you for some info you want in your certificate, and with a few clicks, you'll be on your way.

Then, after you create the .p12 package that AIM accepts, just import it and tell me what you think ;)

URL is at:

http://secure.sylikc.net:8080/self_signed/
or just http://sylikc.net/?secure, and find the HOWTO on the bottom.

Now then you won't have to use a freely downloadable (insecure) certificate, just DIY.

Interesting....I will have a look at those sites tomorrow as it's my day off! Woohoo! :D It certainly does sound promising, but will see if it'll suit me and my needs.

AIM Tweak

I don't mind the ads on the buddy list of AIM, but they recently changed their top ads so that when you open your buddy list, it pops open a small new window (not the AIM TODAY window) and plays a movie file inside it. Too often, that movie file advertisement would freeze up my AIM for a minute or so. That's very ANNOYING! I feel bad for those who are on 56k connection because it nearly froze my computer and I am ON the cable connection! Ugh. I did a little research to tweak the AIM pop up ads, you just do a search on your computer, look for the HOSTS file.. You'd usually find it in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc folder. The HOSTS file will NOT have an extension. Right-click it and check properties, make sure Read-Only option is not checked. Right-click HOSTS file again and open with notepad. You will see the following:

Code:
#
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 64.90.164.34
127.0.0.1 g.msn.com
127.0.0.1 80.80.15.166
127.0.0.1 a1708.g.akamai.net
127.0.0.1 ad.asv.de

Now, at the end of the list, add the line:

Code:
127.0.0.1 cdn.eyewonder.com

And save the HOSTS file. Then, right-click on the HOSTS file and click properties. Make sure Read-Only is checked, then you're all set!

The nasty movie files won't load again!

There is a new version of AIM, 5.9 is out!

It lets me use a 3D Superbuddy with sound, wallpaper and smiley set.

Mine currently looks like:

new_aim.jpg

You can mess with your Superbuddy easily at http://www.stupidbuddy.com!

You can even use the preview how the superbuddy reacts when you type the word or emoticon!!!

Hmm... nice AIM features. However, I still rather stick with Trillian. :thumb:

Well exactly, it doesnt work for AIM 5.9 you'll have to step back up to 5.5 or so, to download AIM Expression. AOL is greedy and just want more money, so all i can see that AIM Expression are suppose to be free. AOL have millions of subscribers and I dont know why they they started to sell their own AIM Buddyicons and Expressions. AOL is indeed a more of millions of dollars company. So, as DoVip said, they're greedy, of course they always are.

hey guys,

I don't know if you already knew: there is a cool trick you can play on AIM. Open a new message window and send to user "SmarterChild". Type anything in the message board. and hit send.

See what happens. Cool, huh?

You're missing the point. We were talking about the new expressions that DOES not work on 5.5. It's the SuperBuddy Expressions, only on 5.9 or later..
