A teacher and advocate for deaf Manitobans received the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Literacy Thursday during a ceremony at Government House.
Medal-winner Judith McDougall works with the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities. She helped create award-winning Deaf for Deaf training videos for math, and helped develop resources for hazardous material information systems in the workplace.
The Office of the Lieutenant Governor described her as “an innovator and visionary who is passionate about teaching English as a second language and American Sign Language to deaf adult immigrants and refugees.”
Another medal honouring literacy partners was awarded to the Newcomer Literacy Initiative, which helps provide literacy and language skills to refugee mothers and other newcomers to the province.
