Sprint Corp. gets Oregon contract

06/07/2004

Associated Press

Kansas-based Sprint Corp. has again been awarded a $2.8 million state contract to provide phone services to deaf and speech-impaired Oregonians.

They can connect using text telephones, which look like small computers. Users type in their conversation, then rout it through a Sprint call center. An operator reads the message to the other party.

About 50,000 calls, or 140,000 billable minutes, go through that system each month. Sprint has operated that system in Oregon for the past 12 years.

Hmm interesting, sounds like answering machine for the relay to leave messages without waiting for operator to answer to do the whole thing.
