The startling case of an Aids patient who was cured after undergoing a bone marrow transplant to treat leukemia is stirring new hope that researchers might someday find a cure for Aids.

The patient, a 42-year-old American living in Berlin, is still recovering from his leukemia therapy, but he appears to have won his battle with Aids. Doctors have not been able to detect the virus in his blood for more than 600 days, despite his having ceased all conventional Aids medication. Normally when a patient stops taking Aids drugs, the virus stampedes through the body within weeks, or days.

When you literally can heal thyself.

Uhhhh....it was a donor marrow transplant. He didn't heal "himself". It required bone marrow taken from a donor, and then placed into his body while under the influence of immuno-suppressive drugs.

 Now that's a miracle!

Not really. The patient probably had chemo and radiation before the transplanted marrow was introduced into his body. Once the transplant "took", his immune system re-established itself. This has been done countless times in the treatment of leukemia. It just seems to have eradicated this guy's HIV, which is awesome! I hope they can replicate this!

Exactly but it's still awesome.

Oh, I agree. And it certainly opens the door to more investigation regarding the combination of immuno-supression and marrow transplants in the treatment of AIDS. Hard to say whether it would be replicable or not, though, given the fact that they didn't control for specific variables to give any indication of why this particular patient reacted the way he did.

There have been numerous accounts of babies born HIV+ that after 2 or 3 years, were completely virus free. They are still trying to figure out exactly how these specific cases rid their bodies of the virus, while others continue to test +. Very complicated stuff, but a ray of hope, nonetheless.

Stem cells is the biggest medical breakthru in history. I read that within 50 years all diseases could be curable/wiped out! Not only that, cancers and organ failures can be addressed as well! They talk about stem cells giving humans the ability to live for centuries!

That still remains to be seen. To date, it is nothing more than possibility. Many medical possibilities have looked wonderful in theory and failed in practicality.
