Your Orthopaedic Connection: Adult (Acquired) Flatfoot

A00173F01.jpg

Mine is normal arch. Flatfoot can lead to low back pain.

I'm flat-footed!....(snif, snif)....all my family is that way, long toes also, ugly feet!....I used to stumble over my own feet a lot, especially when I played basketball. Low back pain? Never had it, only pulled the lumbar muscle a few times......(honeymoon night on a waterbed)....and lifting free weights.

Funny thing is....back in the 60's I wore a size 8-1/2-9 shoe....now I wear a 7 and one-half!....It's not my feet, it's my long toes!...And to top my rant off....the heels of my feet are super sensitive!...They blister very easily, so I wear open heeled shoes. Whenever I do have to wear high-heels, people have said I sounded like a "horse" when I walked, and drug my feet a lot....So...I practiced picking my feet up as if I were tip-toeing "thru the tulips"....A model?? I'm not!

People that put arch support and Hi tops shoes on children, are more likely to have weak feet and/or develop a collapse, becoming flatfeet.

Many medical research have found that barefooted children that did not wear shoes often, or lightweight shoes. Have healthier feet due to the muscles strengthens.

Basically using the muscles and tendons, allowing them to strengthen to support the feet.

Allowing toddlers with Hi tops shoes or shoes with arch support does not able them to use those muscles and tendons. Hence. Like wearing a brace all the time.

It depends. It is not wise to make children that got flat foot from genetic to walk around barefooted. Because they will suffer consequences from it in the future.

My parent is starting to suffer from not wearing proper shoes to support their flat foot during their childhood. I am starting to suffer as well because I don't wear support in the house and I am feeling the pain in my feet and back.
Yeah I am flat foot as well, which I got from my parent, due to genes.

Not wearing support for years and while having flat foot can cause some painful ingrown bones in your feet, which sometimes require a surgery. My parent is going through this, and is trying one of option to try avoid surgery.

But I have never heard of adult acquired flatfoot. That's interesting.

We all in this house have normal arch feet. I know a few have flat feet.
