Pet Rescue Examiner: Adoption of Deaf Cat Is Award Winning

Have you ever considered adopting a pet with disabilities? It can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but potential pet parents must weigh some concerns as well. There can be additional expenses for medical care, lifestyle changes to accommodate the pet and the potential for a shorter lifespan. However, for families that open their hearts and doors to these special furry friends the bond can be amazing.

Gabriella wasn’t even looking to adopt another cat when she walked into the pet food store. There were already four other cats and four dogs at home, calling her Mom. But she decided to just take a peek at the Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary (HCWS) adoption center. Inside the room, she was immediately drawn to a beautiful white cat with bright green eyes. The cat saw Gabriella and began rubbing against the cage trying to get her attention. As Gabriella got closer she read the sign on the cage, “My name is Angel. I am three-years-old and I am deaf.”

Gabriella has always had a soft spot for animals with disabilities, but she went home that day empty-handed. After a lot of discussion with her family, she opened her home and her heart to one more homeless pet. Angel found a new family.

After settling in, Angel’s deafness proved to be more of a gift than a disability. Because she cannot hear sounds that commonly frighten cats, Gabriella says, “Angel isn’t afraid of anything.” So Angel began traveling all over town with her mom and everyone commented on her beautiful looks and calm manner. She even had a wonderful time at the groomers because she was not afraid of the noises from the hairdryer. Angel loved the attention and her natural “celebrity” personality came out.

This gave Gabriella another idea and she entered her new kitty in The International Cat Association (TICA) cat show. To everyone’s surprise, Angel took home the 5th place trophy in the Household Pet category. Gabriella and Angel had so much fun they plan to enter in future competitions. Her mom says, “She expects Angel to win higher trophies because of her easy going personality.”
