Adelaide wins Deaf Games bid | Adelaide Now

ADELAIDE will host the Australian Deaf Games in 2016, attracting hundreds of competitors and delivering an estimated $1.5 million boost to the economy.

The announcement was made by Deaf Sports Australia last night at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Games in Geelong.

Tourism Minister Gail Gago said the event would attract around 900 interstate and international athletes to Adelaide, bringing with them hundreds more spectators, volunteers and officials.

"South Australia is renowned for hosting world-class sporting events and we are proud to be selected for the Australian Deaf Games," Ms Gago said. "It is anticipated the visitors will bring an economic benefit of approximately $1.5 million into the state.

"As with any event held in South Australia, the Games' program will be extended to create a full festival atmosphere, including the construction of a Games village and daily social activities.

"This is a chance for us to support and encourage our local deaf community, while also welcoming visitors who we hope will take advantage of the summer holiday period to visit easily accessible regional areas while they are here."

The 2012 Australian Deaf Games in Geelong involved 16 different sports over eight days of competition.

Deaf Sports Australia president Brent Phillips said Adelaide was an excellent choice to host the 17th event.

"The bid by Events South Australia was outstanding and it presented us with an opportunity to deliver a successful sporting and social event in one of Australia's great cities," he said.

Dates for the January 2016 event will be confirmed later this year.
