Lawmakers Moving Legislation to Ban Animal Cruelty Videos
Posted Sep 16 2010 - 2:38pm

Lawmakers are again considering legislation aimed at outlawing videos that depict animal cruelty. In the spring, the Supreme Court ruling in U.S. v. Stevens, invalidated as a violation of the First Amendment a 1999 federal law that banned creation and disturbution of videos of animal cruelty.

The Blog of Legal Times (BLT) reports on a hearing this week before the Senate Judiciary Committee focused on creating a new law that supposedly would not be as sweeping as the first one. The new legislation is supposedly aimed primarily at crush videos, which show animals being crushed to death by "scantily clad, high-heeled women," as described before the committee by the Humane Society of the United States' (HSUS) vice president for government affairs Nancy Perry.

The BLT, notes that "ACLU lobbyist Michael Macleod-Ball," testified against the bill warning that although animal cruelty is illegal, but that banning such acts would still violated free speech.

In post for the HSUS blog, the group's leader Wayne Pacelle writes that the matter of trying again to ban crush videos has "united members of Congress across the spectrum," noting that the House of Representatives has already passed a bill "to ban interstate and foreign commerce in these abhorrent videos."

So crushing poor defenseless animals such as cats and dogs is ok with the ACLU and is considered free speech? My ass.

The words cannot describe how I feel... ugh.

I could have happily lived a lifetime without knowing that such things ever happened.

Sadly, as much as we hate to think about such things as this really happening, it does.

How bout that ACLU....aren't they wonderful!

It is disgusting, No different than people preying on small children to entertain their sick minds.

I say ban it!!!

Child Porn has been banned from here, so now lets banned animal cruelity videos!!

That organization was repulsive in the early (probably before that, too) 60's and still is today.

Yep, they even defended the KKK and the Neo-Nazis, citing hate speech as free speech. While I may have to agree with that aspect, but I disagree with the disgusting KKK and Neo-Nazi organizations.

I say ban the organizations, but keep free speech free. You can talk crap, but don't organize it and enforce your hate on others.

Free speech is as American as apple pie.
But your free speech ends where my fist begins.

So wait, would this means filming animal cruelty videos is illegal or posessing them? It would put a damper on horror flicks if producers are not allowed to make fake copies. Plus, if such videos are not allowed to be circulated, then the public would be blind to its existence and thus the people who are responsible for creating the videos would never be ousted since it's driven underground.

Child porn is one thing since people get off of that stuff, but animal cruelty is another. Furthermore, how would you even DEFINE animal cruelty? That definition is changing on a day to day basis.

Most majority of animals being killed in Hollywood films is generally off camera, a small percentage gets by, but they're usually very little graphic with the scenes.

What does child porn have to do with it? There's really no based comparisons between the two. Nonetheless CP is just as sick as Animal Crush videos, but they're two different things. The only common denominator between the two is that they are both are disgustedly sick.

If you want your Congressman to ban Animal Crush videos, contact them in support of SB3841 “Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act of 2010″.

If it does include in films, especially horror so no thanks.

Respect our Constitution - free speech, also our court decision.

However, animal cruelty are illegal in real life, anyway.

i couldn't believe it either. It's not freedom of speech when it involves physical abuse toward defenseless animals for pleasure and their argument doesn't make sense to me.

Also I'm pro-hunting as well.

Some people see hunting as animal cruelty and shouldn't allow to make hunting video, how is amazing.

No it shouldn't include horror. Have you Googled it to read the passage of the bill?
