Acid hoax woman 'wanted to kill self'

An American woman who doused her face in drain cleaner says she was trying to kill herself.

Bethany Storro gained worldwide sympathy after she claimed a stranger threw acid in her face. A public fund was even set up to benefit the 28-year-old from Vancouver in the US state of Washington.

Storro has since been charged with three counts of theft, The Columbian newspaper reports.

In an affidavit tendered to court, Storro said she was originally attempting to take her own life when she poured the caustic drain cleaner onto herself.

"Then, when I realised it wasn't killing me, I thought maybe this was the answer to all my problems — to have a completely different face," the affidavit said.

Ms Storro had recently moved back to her parents' home after her divorce in Idaho, and thought her actions would help her problems.

Documents in Clark County Superior Court show Ms Storro had spent about $1500 of the donated money on dinners for her parents, clothing, a train ticket for her sister, and a laser facial peel she had in August.

Police said during their investigation they noticed discrepancies in Storro's story about the alleged attack.

During interviews as well as a search of her home, "Ms Storro admitted the injuries were self-inflicted," Vancouver Police Chief Clifford Cook said.

Police had been seeking a black woman with a ponytail after the supposed August 30 attack.

Storro had said the woman asked her, "Hey, pretty girl, want something to drink?" and then threw acid in her face.

After the attack Storro made several media appearances, although a planned interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show was later cancelled.

In a press conference from hospital, Storro described her attack in graphic detail.

"It was the most painful thing ever," she said.

"My heart stopped. It ripped through my clothing the instant it touched my shirt; I could feel it burning through my second layer of skin."
