About deaf schools

Back in 1950's-1970's, there were many deaf people that overcrowded the deaf school, that lead to the congress to pass the bill in 1973 to allow deaf students to enroll at local public school.

Now, we have rubella vaccine that cause declining of deaf babies and FDA allows CI to implantable in deaf babies, so enable them to develop the language at beginning. Consideration on deaf school as last resort is correct.

I'm talking about residential deaf school - last new one was MSSD in 1970's.

Actually no. Congress did not pass that law due to overcrowding in Deaf Schools. They passed it b/c disabled kids weren't being educated, and dhh kids were lumped in with other kids with disabilties. Granted it's good that that law opened up regional dhh programs outside of big cities.
And rubella hasn't been a major cause of dhh since the '70's.
Why are you so fixtated on CI being a cause of the deaf decline? KIDS WITH CI are STILL deaf, and not all of them develop spoken language... Just ask any teacher at a Deaf school, with a lot of transfers from CID, Sunshine Cottage and public oral programs.Heck very few of them develop ON PAR verbal IQs.....and MANY if not most of those who do STILL require dhh support (even schooling) or learn ASL as a second language. Heck I know of quite a few oral implanted kids who transferred to MSSD or their state School for the Deaf, and are now Deaf! Heck, hearing aids also affect a lot more kids being oral......but you don't see Deaf people fussing about that. And just b/c dhh kids are oral or use CI/HAs, it doesn't mean they're not Deaf. Yes, the number of kids who don't have expressive spoken English is kinda small.... but who is to say that's REAL Deaf? There are MANY different ways to be Deaf....and unaided/unimplanted, no expressive spoken language skills isn't the ONLY way/interpreation to be Deaf!

:dizzy:

and yes you're right......the last res school was MSSD. But res school was still really big back then. I mean there were still many little and elementary kids in the dorms back then. Heck, res school was still really big for blind/low vision and even wheelchair/mobilty (ie crutches and walkers) kids..(ever hear of crippled children's schools?)

I'm just pointing out some of the flaws in your arguments....The BIGGEST reason why Deaf Schools aren't a BIG thing any more is due to inclusion being pushed. That and the fact that some states have a policy where the state is the only one who can refer the student to the School for the Deaf.
If it wasn't pushed, you'd see a lot more kids attending Schools for the Deaf and Dhh programs.
You see the same thing with blind schools..... they're last resort and often deal with the same " state only one who can refer the student to the Blind School" problem.
You're also assuming that the only ones who will attend Deaf Schools are the audilogically deaf kids......Some HOH kids attend Deaf Schools you know!
