A Poll - would you want your deafness cured?

What many people do not know is that the mainstream press conveniently forget to mention that embryonic stem cells cannot be used safely in human beings at present because of worries over tissue rejection and their demonstrated propensity in animal studies to cause deadly tumors--problems not associated with adult stem cell therapies.
:eek3: I never had any idea about this distinction between adult and embryonic stem cells! Thank you for an illuminating post.

Still, such adult stem cell treatment for hearing loss is still years away and may or may not achieve a high degree of success in eliminating hearing loss. Admittedly, adult stem cell therapies hold much promise in ameloriating Deafness and such scientific study and development should be encouraged.
I've been aware of how many of the press manipulates stem cell coverage by touting embryonic stem cells to no end versus adult or tissue stem cells successes.

Ask yourself this question. Why is the mainstream media doing this?
I don't know either. Maybe it's the 'ethical' issues surrounding the embryonic stem cell tissue collection is what makes it 'newsworthy'? Perhaps, adult stem cell tissue may be difficult and/or costly to harvest, while embryonic stem cell tissue can be readily available, thanks to hundreds of fertility clinics and surplus genetic material currently on ice.

In case... if stem cell would be succeesful... Guess who would be first candidates,,, Rich people... no hope for needy peoples,,,, in 30 yrs maybe

Stupid rich people! They don't deserve health care either even though they pay through the nose for it.

Wow!! It's like a dream. If it comes true, I really don't know if I will go for it because if I got my hearing fixed, I may be not really happy. It's a HUGE change for me because I've been deaf for so many years since birth. Fixing hearing is much more natural than CI. CI is like hearing aid. When you wear hearing aid or CI and you don't want to hear the sounds, you can always turn it off or take it off as much as you want. But as for this stem cell regeneration, it is permanent. So, it's VERY SCARY for me because what if I'm not too happy with the sounds by being too overwhelming, you can NOT turn the sound off. So scary!!

I prefer to let others to take it first. I prefer profoundly deaf birth people go first and see how they feel.

If this stem cell generation is very successful for all people with many different types of hearing loss, then it would be so amazing and also, CI may be not be on the market anymore.

So, I really don't know if I want to hear normally because I was born with profoundly deaf.

Probably not, it would take several years before health insurance will approve for low and middle class people who need have spem cell to cure the disease and handicapped issues.

I would never go for a cure for my deafness. I would get a cochlear implant, even with a CI I still have the option of being deaf. With a "cure", you can never go back to being deaf, and I like the option of turning off when I need to. So many times my mom wishes I would go for the cure, and I've tried to explain to her that I don't want to be cured, she still does not understand that I like being deaf, and having the option to hear or not to hear.

If I ever became deaf I don't think I'd want it to be cured. I hear enough BS in the world now-a-days. If I went deaf later on in life. I'd use a hearing aid & only hear what I want to hear:)
