A Peek Inside the New VSDB Dorm
The Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind is welcoming students back Tuesday after many were evacuated from their homes along the East Coast. However, when they arrive, the students will have a top-of-the line place to crash in their new dorm rooms.
The new dorm is specifically designed for deaf students. It's large and open so they can see each other and communicate through signing with teachers across the hall. It also has emergency lights in every room as well as a light-up doorbell.
The students and parents got a sneak peek a couple of weekends ago, and everyone was not only impressed but excited about what the expansion will bring to the school.
"What we need now are more students, and those students come to us from all over the state of Virginia. So, we need to get the word out there that we are a viable site, that we are the experts, actually, in dealing with deafness, blindness and deaf-blindness," says Superintendent Nancy Armstrong.
The school is also building a new dorm for its blind students which should open some time in October.
