TODAY'S ZAMAN
Against all odds a group of deaf students, under the baton of teacher Umut Yaymak, have formed a flute ensemble.
Students at the Buruciye Primary School for the Hearing Impaired in Sivas are getting flute lessons with the help of a special technique developed by Yaymak.
Although actually on the staff of the Ahmet Kutsi Tecer Primary School, Yaymak was assigned to Buruciye to give extra lessons there. He developed an exclusive system for the deaf students, teaching them notes and technique. He also plans to teach them other instruments such as the organ and bağlama.
Admitting that he was anxious about how to teach music to the deaf students at first, Yaymak explained: “But then I developed a new system. And I gathered all the talented students from the classes I lectured.” He has been working with these students since then, forming the first group of its kind in Turkey.
And as Yaymak notes, “Playing a music instrument must be very exciting for them as well.” Indeed, emphasizing their love of music, the students have also expressed their happiness at playing a musical instrument, adding that they will continue playing the flute.
Unique technique
Yaymak developed an exclusive teaching technique, which includes colors and signs, for the deaf students. “As for the musical notes, I ascribed a sign for each of them, different than the usual ones. For instance I used fractional expressions. And as the students like mathematics, they have no difficulty in using them. Then I ascribed colors for each of the notes, blue for ‘So,’ red for ‘La’ or black for ‘Ti’. So when the student sees the color, he or she immediately plays the note,” Yaymak said. In addition, the second most important technique includes the signs. Each finger signals a musical note, Yaymak said.
