New Port Richey, Florida - "9-1-1 what is your emergency?”

The caller on the line says, “My girlfriend... I don't know, she's choking!”

911 operator Jenny Montanino received that call March 24th saying that Nancy McGhee was choking to death inside a Land O'Lakes home.

The operator asks the caller if he can do the Heimlich Maneuver, but he misunderstands and asks if she means to get behind her.

As part of the investigation into the incident by the Pasco Fire Department, Montanino says she asked for assistance for what's called "emergency medical dispatch," because she is not yet certified to do this.

But her supervisor Dave Cook, who in the past has been disciplined for sleeping on duty, said "I am not getting on with a hysterical caller."

The caller begged the operator to get people to the home and she assured him help was coming, but the caller hung up in frustration.

Montanino called him back and eventually Cook got on the line, but the caller was getting more upset:

Cook asks the caller if the woman was alert and the caller replies, "No sir." Cook asks again, and the caller tells him the same thing.

Cook then firmly says, "Listen to me, listen to me." The caller says he can't do Heimlich Maneuver, and Cook responds by saying "Alright, I'm going to give you back to the operator."

The report says Cook dropped the phone receiver onto the desk and said, "See, he's not listening."

And not only was there confusion inside the Pasco 911, but also because emergency units were out of place, it took 11 minutes after the call came before help arrived -- even though there is a fire station 7.6 miles away. And by that time, Nancy McGhee was dead

The investigation also shows Cook laughingly said after the woman died, ”Another one bites the dust," and "I guess she bit off more than she can chew.”

Cook -- who was found sleeping on the job again the day after the incident -- turned in his resignation for medical reasons. The Pasco Fire Department is continuing an investigation.

The assistant supervisor, Maureen Thomas, is also on leave.

It's sad to see something like this to happen. When you are expected to call 911, It is their duty to help the people in an emergency situation instead of 'brushing' it away just because the supervisor didn't want to take his sweet time dealing with that scenario.

If the supervisor didn't want to deal with it then why was he there in the first place to begin with, or much less, working there at all, you know? I mean, really - This situation did NOT have to happen and unfortunately it did.

This story also reminds me of a similar 911 call that happened in Detroit, Michigan. It was on another thread that I had posted last year -- Boy's ignored 911 call leads to charges

Damn! That 911 supervisor should loose his job! Poor her hubby grieving over his gf's death. :(

WTF!?

I hate it when operators joke about something and it gets recorded.

I don't care if people make a joke about it, but in a business environment where it can be overheard by others... is unprofessional.

OMG, that's soo sad :( ....Something more needs to be done since this isn't the first time this had happened..

This could be cited as patient neglect and or abandonment. EMDs are under any circumstance allowed to end the call until Medics arrive on scene. You can bet he'll lose his EMD certs as well as any EMT/P certs he might have. He can kiss working for any civil service good bye now that his name and department has been plastered in the media.

Yeah as a former EMT you tend not to get emotionally attached to your patients because if you do, then your doctor starts fearing for not only physical state but also your emotional state. But thats not to say that you get be an asshole to everyone you come in contact with. He should have just taken the call, walked the guy through the heimlich and possibly have ordered the caller to start CPR and to keep giving CPR until Medics arrive on scene. Then when it was said and done then he could have made whatever comments he wanted to make in private. He knew he had seriously fucked up, and he wanted to try and save his ass from the legal prosecution that was about to come so he resigns and whistles off like nothing ever happened. God forbid we ever have anyone like that here. In our rural area, time is everything here.

I wish there have subtitle on the video that the guy called 911 but nothing so I just listen which I dont know what they said but hear sound like the breath went out of control or something then later it hung up and call again in twice as I hear the phone was rang .. wow that the 911 operator look like ingore the guy who is called 911 damn!!
