84 Year-Old Deaf Grandad Arrested
Ismail Mohamed (Ismailbe'), one of the opposition’s oldest and most enthusiastic supporters, has been arrested for distributing leaflets about the death of Hussein Salah.
The ageing activist, who says he is 84, was arrested on Sunday at around 10am near Malé’s trade centre. He was taken to police headquarters and transferred to house arrest at around 4pm the same day.
Then on Monday police came to his house and took him to Atoluvehi detention centre to take fingerprints. Police have reportedly told him that if he does not say who gave him the leaflets, he will be taken to Dhoonidhoo jail.
Ismailbe', who is deaf, is a regular at the MDP office in Malé, popping in up to ten times a day to see what is going on with the party, say MDP officials. Party Secretary General, Hamid Abdul Ghafoor, describes him as “a character” who always “brings cheer to occasions.”
A lawyer has been appointed to represent him, Abdulla Shair (Shaif) and a campaign to secure his release has been started, which includes a website – www.FreeIsmailbe.com – and an online petition calling for his release.
