Local news in brief Jan. 10 - SantaFeNewMexican.com

Nellie Bartholomew, a Nebraska native and New Mexico resident, wanted to honor her son's memory by leaving her estate to his former school.

But when Bartholomew died in 2008, the officer of her estate discovered the Nebraska School for the Deaf, which her son had attended, had closed in 1998.

So the officer, a banker in Lovington, N.M., looked for an alternate school serving deaf students. She found the New Mexico School for the Deaf, and recently the school received the $80,000 estate.

The school will split the money, using $16,000 to build shade shelters for its early-childhood and elementary playground and $64,000 going to the Rabbi Helman Experiential Programs Endowment, according to a release from the school.

Keri-Lynn McBride, the spokeswoman for the school, said the endowment fund helps to pay for students to attend various camps or make field trips that cannot be paid for using state funds.

The addition of $64,000, as well as a $15,000 donation last fall, brings the total endowment to about $200,000, McBride said.
