NEW YORK -- ``60 Minutes'' correspondent Mike Wallace, arrested in a dispute with city parking enforcement inspectors, says he wonders why anyone thought that he, at 86, was a threat.

Wallace was handcuffed and taken to police precinct headquarters after the incident Tuesday evening outside. He was released after being issued a summons citing him with disorderly conduct.

The dispute began as Wallace was leaving an Upper East Side restaurant, WCBS-TV reported. Wallace saw two Taxi and Limousine Commission inspectors interviewing his driver, who they said was double-parked outside the restaurant.

The TLC said Wallace approached the inspectors and became ``overly assertive and disrespectful,'' interfering with their ability to perform their duties, according to WCBS.

The inspectors then asked him to step away from the car and Wallace refused, lunging at one of the inspectors, according to the TLC. Spokesman Allan Fromberg told the New York Post that ``the other inspector feared for his partner's safety.''

Wallace laughed off the notion.

``I'm an 86-year-old man,'' he told the Post. ``For whatever reason, this guy and his buddy were intent upon telling me that I was interfering with the execution of the law.''

Luigi Militello, the manager of Luke's Restaurant, told WCBS that the inspectors ``manhandled'' Wallace.

CBS said in a statement Tuesday that Wallace was at home and that more information would be released if it became available. Wallace has been with CBS since the 1950s and on its flagship ``60 Minutes'' newsmagazine since its inception in 1968.

Wallace is due in court in October.

Mike Wallace is accustomed to asking the tough questions. Last night, his aggressive personality got him arrested by two Taxi & Limousine Commission inspectors when he lunged at one during a parking dispute on the Upper East Side, the TLC said.

Three witnesses, however, said the inspectors overreacted and that the gathering crowd booed as the "60 Minutes" personality was arrested.

Wallace, 86, was handcuffed and taken to the 19th Precinct station house, where he was issued a summons for disorderly conduct and released.

Wallace was picking up a meat loaf dinner at a restaurant when two TLC inspectors started questioning the driver of the for-hire vehicle Wallace was riding in. The car was double-parked at East 79th Street and 3rd Avenue, according to TLC spokesman Allan Fromberg.

As the driver was being questioned, Wallace emerged from the restaurant, Luke's Bar & Grill. When he saw what was happening, he "began to interfere" with the inspectors, Fromberg said.

"He became overly assertive and was reported to be disrespectful to the inspectors," Fromberg said. "He was asked three times to step away from the vehicle and cease interfering. At one point Mr. Wallace appeared to lunge toward one of the two inspectors. The other inspector became concerned with his partner's safety and at that point cuffed Mr. Wallace."

But Luigi Militello, owner of Luke's, said that when Wallace, a regular at his restaurant, stepped outside to talk to the inspectors one of them told Wallace, "Don't give me any lip."

Ernesto Cavalli, owner of Due, a restaurant next door, backed up Militello's account, adding that Wallace replied, "I'm not giving any lip."

"He kind of stepped back and asked, 'I would like to know what happened,'" Cavalli said. "The TLC officer grabbed his shirt and pushed him very strongly against the car and handcuffed him." Cavalli said the inspector then turned to the crowd and said, "Anybody else?"

Who the fuck cares about what they do? They're just human beings...I know the media tend to jazz things up by creating a mountain out of a mole hill of everything. I'm sure someone of lesser celebrity status has done such a thing, but it didn't make it to the news, hey? Unless he went on a murdering spree and killed hundreds of people.
