Michigan boy drives to video store and home again

SAND LAKE, Mich. - A boy drove his mother’s car to a video store in the middle of the night, police said — and he’s all of 4 years old.

Even though he was unable to reach the accelerator, the boy managed to put the car in gear and the idling engine provided enough power to take him slowly to the store, a quarter-mile from his home, about 1:30 a.m. Friday, Police Chief Doug Heugel said. Finding the store closed, the youngster began a slow trip home.

Weaving and with its headlights off, the car got the attention of police Sgt. Jay Osga, who initially thought he was following a driverless car that had taken off after being left running at a gas pump.

The car turned into the boy’s apartment complex and struck two parked cars, then backed up and struck Osga’s police car.

That’s when Osga discovered the boy inside.

“He knew how to go from forward to reverse,” Osga said Monday. “The mother said she taught him how to drive by letting him sit on her lap and steer.”

No charges will be filed against the boy or his mother, Heugel said.

“He’s 4 years old. His mom didn’t even know he was up,” Heugel told The Grand Rapids Press. “I don’t think he even realizes what he did.”

:eek2: wow, I'm sure surprise he made it home without any bruise mark on him!.. I hope the mother learn her lesson by placing her car keys out of the reach of her 4 years old son , he may be lucky this time, but next time who knows :Ohno: ...

I cant imagine teaching my girls how to steer or drive from my lap at age 4.

That is asking for major trouble!!!

I wonder if he wanted to go get a movie like Shrek 2?

hahaha Meg, or maybe Shark Tale, oh that's right it suppose to come out tmr....you could be right ;)

that story sound so cute but damn your right he very lucky he is safe. I hope his mother have special lock on the door from now on.

Kudos to the kid for mastering the art of driving! :)

OMG, I thought it was a joke at first until I read it on MSNBC. That is too funny.

next time, that kid should take the driving school first :o

OMG!!

this reminds of ME!! SHEEESH!!

i totalled my parent's car at the age of 3 .. and a speech therapist's brother-in-law's car at the age of 5 sheesh!!

my mom told me that ever since i was a baby.. i was always fascinated with driving cars, how they started the car, put into gear/changing gears, how people steer, etc.. and i watched every move they made like a HAWK.. LOL that lead into this troubles LOL ! lol and also my parents and my moms bf would have have me sit on their laps and let me steer when i was growing up! lol

when i was 3.. the four of us went on a day trip.. came home in the afternoon.. (we lived on a hill) i was asleep in the backseat of car.. my parents didnt want to wake me up.. so they left me in the car and went in the house with my sister.. i woke up from my nap... climbed into the front seat.. i think i started the car and then put it in reverse.. the car slowly rolled down the hill.. my sister came outside with food in her mouth and football on her hand.. she saw the car rolling.. she screamed and couldn't talk with food in her mouth.. so she ran into the house to get my parents.. they couldnt understand what she was saying ... she was pointing outside.. my parents realized i was in the car.... they ran outside.. it was too late cuz i crashed into two trees .. (my dad said the CAR WAS TOTALLED BIG TIME cuz it went between two trees... he couldnt believe i was just sitting on the seat, UNINJURED AND LAUGHING!!!)

when i was five.. i stayed with my speech therapist one summer.. she came from a big italian family.. i am close to her niece anita.. so one day anita, her parents and i went to get some flowers at a farm.. i was so bored.. so i snucked out of the greenhouse.. got in her dad's car.. and the next thing i know/remember.. i drove into the greenhouse.. the front of the car was damaged.. UP TO THIS DAY.. anita and her dad dont let me live it down!! LOL

You a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad girl, Zestynaughtygirl! I knew that you have some bad streak in you!!!

The worse thing I ever did related to cars was when I threw my mom's car keys into the lake. ;) I was little and stupid, so I just tossed that damn thing into the lake. I guess that would explain why her car was abandoned and we ended up hitchhiking the rest of the way. ;)

Hahaha... actually, I was only 5 years old at the time. She had kidnapped me and I was too little to actually understand what was going on. I guess I was in the mood to be throwing things. ;)

That's my different parents. They don't even know about the key-tossing thing. ;)

oh you are adopted??
Yep! That incident with the key-tossing was while I was kidnapped. I was kidnapped on my 5th birthday. Anyway, I was just a kid and didn't completely understand what was going on.
