25-mile stretch of I-70 opens after a nearly 8-hour closing
I-70 reopens near Topeka after standoff ends - NBCActionNews.com - Kansas City

TOPEKA, Kansas - A standoff on Interstate 70 ended after seven hours on Wednesday. The standoff forced troopers to close a 25-mile stretch of I-70 for the second time this week.

At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, the highway was closed in both directions from Auburn Road in Shawnee County to K-99 in Wabaunsee County. There are no on or off-ramps between the two.

Around 4 p.m., eastbound I-70 was reopened and about 15 minutes later, westbound I-70 was reopened.

The patrol said a trooper pulled over the motor home at about 8 a.m. in Wabaunsee County. When the trooper approached the vehicle, the man slammed the door shut and began making threats of violence.

A trooper on scene said they couldn't be sure whether or not the man was alone in the vehicle.

Additional troopers arrived on scene and the patrol called in their Special Response Team to assist with the situation.

At 3:30 p.m., Kansas Highway Patrol took the barricaded driver into custody.

The same stretch of road, just west of Topeka, was shut down for nine hours on Monday as crews worked to investigate a possible haz mat situation inside a pickup truck.
