A VOLUNTEER has been given a long-term service award by the Hertfordshire Hearing Advisory Service (HHAS).
Veronica Broadie, from Letchworth GC, has been a volunteer for the service for 20 years.
Every month she visits housebound people, or those living in care homes or sheltered accommodation, to help them with their hearing aid and offer support on coping with hearing loss.
She is also a trustee of the charity and is on the volunteer service committee.
She said: "I keep going because it's incredibly rewarding.
"Sometimes the people I visit can't hear a thing and they'll tell me how miserable they feel.
"They can't carry on a normal life if they can't hear.
"When I fix the problem, their face will light up as they say 'I can hear again'.
"Just a few minutes with someone can revolutionise their lives.
"For some people I'm the only person they see and they long for a chat. It's a social thing as well as a hearing aid service.
"I hope to do another 20 years."
Veronica started volunteering for HHAS after her daughter started school, and was attracted initially by the flexibility that volunteering for the charity offers - she can choose which days and hours she wants to work each month.
Gary Appleby, HHAS's volunteer co-ordinator, said: "We can't thank Veronica enough for the 20 years she has given to the charity.
"It is only with the help of volunteers like Veronica that we are able to offer support to hundreds of people suffering from hearing loss in the area."
HHAS is keen to attract more volunteers to the service. Of the 19 sheltered accommodation and care homes in the Letchworth GC area, only nine are currently visited by a HHAS volunteer.
