Two men who allegedly killed and ate a family's pet dog pleaded guilty this afternoon to first-degree animal cruelty.
Saturnino Palting, 48, and Nelson Domingo, 49, each entered what is called a deferred acceptance of guilty plea to the charge. If Circuit Judge Randal Lee accepts the pleas at a sentencing hearing in July, the two will be able to keep their criminal records clear if they stay out of further trouble with the law.

In return for the plea, the prosecutor's office dismissed a second charge of theft.

Palting and Domingo allegedly stole an 8-month-old puppy named Caddy from Moanalua Golf Course in December 2007 and took it to a home where they butchered and ate it.

The dog had been left on a leash near an equipment shack by its owner, who discovered the animal missing when he returned to retrieve it.

Palting and Domingo, who worked as groundskeepers at the course, were charged under a new felony animal abuse law, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

"We will be asking for an open term of five years (in prison)," Deputy Prosecutor Kristine Yoo said after Palting entered his plea.

"This case is not about anybody's culture, its not about anyone's eating habits," she said.

"It's about cruelty to animals."

I knew that some cultures would eat dogs like China or Vietnam but those guys' surnames sound hispanic.

But my question, were they starving?

That is what I was wondering as well.

The only thing they did wrong was if they were. Is that they stole the family pets.

It should be no different than stealing a neighbors chicken, and eating it.

If it was any type of farm animal, would they get the same charges???

Since dogs are known to be eaten in other countries. It is just such a Taboo in the U.S.

It could be but they should not take which it belongs to someone else.

I agree...

But my question.. Is... If it was an U.S. Farm animal, would they be charged with animal cruelty?

Since eating dogs, is such a taboo in the United States.

If they humanely slaughtered the dog there should be no jail time

They stole the dogs. They should be charged for that.

But for animal cruelty. NO. If they did it humanely, and did not do it out of spite of the neighbors.

Yea, I was wondering the same thing.

Also, I know with the economy the way it is, if they were starving, they probably were driven by a fierce need to eat. :dunno:

I watched a movie which was a true story about an airplane crashing into remote mountains. The passengers were stranded in the bitter cold and after days of no food, they started eating the other passengers who had died.

If they have a mental illness involving eating dogs for gratification, then they need help.

I have seen the same movie... Sad it was. They had to do it to survive.

but these people that stole the dogs and ate them... We truly need more information of why they did it.

I remember my grandfather telling me a story about the great depression. His cousin was shot for trying to steal a watermelon out of his neighbors patch. He was shot dead.

No question they should be prosecuted for stealing.

Shot dead? Damn!

Yup. My mother even went on the Genealogy website, regarding the family history/tree. She even found an article about it, after Granddaddy passed away. So his story was confirmed.

Back then. People had the right to shoot to protect their crops.

No doubt they should be charged for theft.

My main thing is..... I am wondering how the courts would look at it.. If it was the neighbors "pet chicken, hog or any other animal that Americans eat" would it be as publicized and such a Taboo. Would they be charged for animal cruelty. Due to that is a 5 year sentence alone.

Again I would love to know the reason, why they did what they did.

That alone could make a difference. If they were hungry and did not know what to do. Then I can see it.

This reminds me of the case of the men that shot and ate the geese, at a public park.

Whoaaaa. This was somebody's pet, whom they most likely loved very dearly. To take it back to your kitchen & eat it??

I can fully understand & agree with those people who say, "Well what about farm animals?" Such is true. But I also agree with those people that talk about the fact that they stole such animal. Couldn't they have maybe ate some Ritz crackers to hold them over or something?

I agree!...If somebody took my dog, butchered it and ate it....I might be in jail today!....I dunno if they were starving, (probably not)...and if they were, why not go out and get an animal in the woods?....Or even eating out of the dumpsters??....In back of restaurants, they throw away a lot of good food!

I hope they lock them up for 15 years. But probably not, just get a "slap on the hand". The dog was a beloved pet! What gave them the right to do something like that?

That's so disgusting and it terrifies me that those two men had tortured and ate the family dog. I hope they rots in prison.
