Horrible experience with surgeon on surgery day

Happened to me on both of my implants. I was asked multiple times (at least once by each person who dealt with me) which ear was being implanted. Seemed kind of silly for the second implant, as I was obviously wearing a very visible CI processor on my left side while being prepped for right-side...

    Coclear implant question

The ear I didn't wear a HA in wasn't completely deaf, but it was considered unaidable.

    Coclear implant question

I grew up wearing a single hearing aid from the age of 3 until the age of 48. My "other" ear was unaidable. At age 48, i got a CI in my aided ear with excellent results. At age 49, I got a CI in my "other" ear, with a different kind of result - I can hear things in that ear for the first time...

    Ab implant and music

I wanted to give a little update... For me, I find that my pitch perception (and thus my ability to sing in tune) is much better if I wear only one of my CI processors. For listening to music, both is better - for performing, one is better. That's just my experience, but a couple of doctors...

    Ab implant and music

I'll point out that there *are* bilateral CI recipients who are quite competent musical performers. As you say, pitch discrimination can be a challenge - there are always "outliers" - people who end up doing extremely well and people who end up doing extremely poorly, as well as the "average"...

I took a day off today.

I don't do Facebook either, and Cochlear doesn't have an active user forum anywhere but Facebook, unfortunately.

What is the average length of time to get used to cochlear implant?

I really don't think there is an answer, KY guy. It depends on a LOT - how long since you lost your hearing, your auditory memory, your brain, etc, etc. I'll give you my example: my left ear (severe loss at 3 yo, hearing aid for 45 years before implant) - had a "aha" moment 2 days after...

    Ab implant and music

Are you a member of AAMHL (Association of Adult Musicians With Hearing Loss)? That may be a good place to ask. As I'm not a professional musician, I won't share my experience as a performing musician with Cochlear Implants and the musical training I've undergone or how my pitch perception has...

    Poll of all polls

They don't use "Viagra," but the use a drug with the same active ingredient. Viagra is a vasodialator - it helps those blood vessels in Mr. Johnson open up and allow the blood to flow and, well you know. The same ingredient helps open blood vessels in the lungs. Our daughter did receive it for a...

    Medical model and cochlears

I think (s)he's (sorry, don't know the person) saying that Audiologists recommend CI's, not doctors, and that if doctors hated disabled people, they'd all be out of work. Jammed two thoughts into one paragraph :)

    Medical model and cochlears

"doctors hate disabled people and want to get rid of them and that is why they try and find cures" One of the most crucial things you could ever learn at university is to read things with a critical eye. That statement is so obviously propaganda and not objective fact. There are obviously...

    Medical model and cochlears

I'll give my view. I'm long-term deaf, but am not Deaf. It's complicated :) deafness, medically speaking, is a disability. Deafness is not, it's a culture. Neither of them means the person is any better or any worse than another. I don't feel any less worthy (or more worthy, for that matter)...

Newly implanted, just turned on 2 days ago

Sounds like a good thing to discuss with your audi, but I do know that some audis suggest not wearing a hearing aid in the contralateral ear to help the implanted ear (or more to the point, the brain) to learn more quickly. I make a point of removing my first implant's processor at least some...

Newly implanted, just turned on 2 days ago

Yes, it's pretty normal. I had construction workers in my house the day after activation, they had their radio on and were bang bang banging with hammers. Everything sounded like beeps and bells - it was absolutely horrendous. My brain adapted pretty quickly though - and within a couple of days...

Confused about a ci or keeping hearing aids?

So do hearing aids. Cochlear implants do NOT have a battery in the implanted part, just on the external processor.

Are we allowed to sell ci processor on this forum?

People sell their hearing aids on eBay, too. It's not technically legal as far as I understand - that doesn't mean it's enforced.

Are we allowed to sell ci processor on this forum?

If you're in the USA, it's technically not legal to sell your CI processor privately - same as Hearing Aids, they are classified as medical devices.
