    Cochlear Implant Explantation

I DO have bilateral acoustic neuromas. That's how I got diagnosed with NF2. That ear is toast to any CIs, because my auditory nerve is dead.

    Cochlear Implant Explantation

Thank you. I don't think it will be painless.... I'm already cringing at the fact that he's going to make the same incision as less than a month ago. It's still sore and I still wear some gauze on my glasses. But that's what pain meds are for;)

    Failed Ci....removal?

I'll need MRIs at least once a year for the rest of my life due to neurofibromatosis type II. Yes, I would want an ABI, because as soon as they need to take the tumor out on the other side, he pretty much promised me he'd make me deaf. I wish I would have had this surgeon for my first...

    Cochlear Implant Explantation

I want it removed because it doesn't work. Well, I think IT works, but my auditory nerve doesn't. Anyways, I met with my surgeon yesterday at Mayo, and I am having it removed this Wed. He's taking the whole thing out, including the electrodes. A reason he agreed was the nature of NF2 and...

    Cochlear Implant Explantation

Exactly. The Med El rep said that there are 7 Tesla MRIs being done in Europe. My CI is compatible with 3 Tesla. Given I have NF2, and will need scans at the least once a year for the rest of my life, and the rapid growth of medical technology, it might be a good idea to get it out now where...

    Cochlear Implant Explantation

I have a Med El. I spoke with an audiologist from Med El yesterday, and she would think it should come out for a couple reasons. I will share them with my surgeon tomorrow. I'm also worried that an explantation surgery wouldn't be covered by insurance.

    Hello, New Here

Hi, my name is Mary. I'm 36 years old and I lost hearing in my left ear due to a partial tumor resection on my 8th cranial nerve. I lost my hearing, had facial paralysis, and balance issues. My face has gotten a lot better, but will never be the same. My balance is better, but it's not the...

    Failed Ci....removal?

I will need either another craniotomy or radiation on both sides at some point. Whether it be surgery or radiation, I will be deaf in the other ear regardless. If my first surgeon knew anything about NF2, he would have put an ABI in during my first partial tumor resection (the one that made me...

    Failed Ci....removal?

Mind you, I can still hear perfectly out of my right ear, yet someday it will go too. That is why I want to learn sign proactively while I can still hear, and even teach deaf students while I can still hear.

    Failed Ci....removal?

Yeah, the first surgeon had told me that my nerve was intact along with my facial nerve. The tumors lie on the 8th cranial nerve where the vestibular(balance), facial, and hearing nerves are. All were affected. He promised that my face and hearing would be back to normal in 6 months. He...

    Failed Ci....removal?

Wimbledon...in England. It's one of the 4 grand slam tournaments for the best in the world. I'm just a club player and coach. It would be a dream just to be a spectator at one of the slams:)

    Failed Ci....removal?

I took an 8 week community course. I want to take a four course ASL program at the local community college. I'm at tennis player, and my long-term goal is to teach tennis to the deaf

    Failed Ci....removal?

Hi, I just had a Med El CI put in two weeks ago with hopes to gain some hearing and relief from my terrible tinnitus. I have NF2. For those who don't know what that is, it's a genetic disease that the hallmark of it is bilateral vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuromas). I had my left side's...
