How did ASL grammar and English grammer get to be so different in the USA?

Wow. These are great posts. I haven't yet been taught the rules about ASL grammar, so reading your posts have given me very interesting glimpses into my future with ASL. si5s to write ASL

I hope I am not offending anyone by saying this, but I have never heard of anything so ridiculous. Like AlleyCat said, ASL is not a written language. Since most ASLers can read and write in their local spoken languages, why do we need to bastardize ASL by turning it into something it is not?

    How do Deaf people drive?

I've heard that deaf people are actually safer drivers, because they don't get distracted by sounds like hearing people do. Driving is a very visual activity, and we are very visual people.

What color is your t.v. closed captions letters?

Hi Desiree! Hey. we have the same name. Cool! I've never met another Desiree before. I too have wondered about the cc1 cc2, and text 1 and 2. I've tried all options, but have never figured it out what the last three are. I think the text options gives you a big blob of text. When I tried it...

    Some people name their cars...

:giggle: I know what you mean. The digitals seem to be bereft of the warmth and feeling to the sound. To me at least, the digital does sound clearer, and I like how you can program it to fit your specific hearing loss. The analog just amplifies everything, even background noise. But, like...

    Is deafness a "handicap?"

My only "handicap" is society's "caveman" attitudes towards us, and anyone else with a disability.
