    What's great about being single?

Living alone in a bubble... I have been married for 31 years but have not lived with my wife for the last 10 years, and not by choice. We have 8 grown children so I'm used to having a lot of people around. I only see a family member every once in a while during the week. I have always been...

    Is deafness a "handicap?"

Here's a related question.... I am a "born again" Christian and I am constantly be told that God will heal me of my HOH. I am 55 and I am still HOH. Did God make me this way and must I stay this way? I don't regret being HOH. I just hate having to deal with the hearing community! I feel like...

    Deaf/HOH and prayer meetings

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but... I attend prayer meetings because that's what religious people do, right? I HATE prayer meetings with hearing people because everyone bows their heads and speaks real softly. I am embarrassed to keep my head up to lip read...

    Choosing Not To Speak

I talk very well... ...I don't hear very well and so I am not always sure if I am speaking loud enough or too loud.] The bigger problem is understanding hearing people.

    What's a difference between deaf and hard-of-hearing?

I prefer the term... "partially deaf" over "hard of hearing" or "hearing disabled" because partially deaf is more acurate and easy for the hearing world to understand.

Is being deaf a disability or not?

I don't like... the term "disablility" because it implies that I am not a whole or complete person, that there is something wrong with me, something missing and that I should be pitied. God made me the way I am and I am complete and whole just as I am.

Are you the only or the first deaf person in ur entire family?

In my family... I have two great uncles who were partially deaf and then it skipped my mother's generation. I am the only partially deaf person in my generation and there are no partially deaf in my children's generation. Now I have a grand-daughter who is partially deaf. (What interesting...

if you love hearing world like peeps, schools, why you graduate school deaf?

Sometimes... I feel that I am in a no mans land because I do not know signing and I have a frustrating and sometimes despairing time with the hearing world. I often feel left behind and left in my own bubble. I went to an aural school for the hearing impaired and I learned to use a...

Plan to be specific major which focus on communication between deaf and hearing

The only way.. .. for communication to really happen between any different groups is a real desire to get to know the other party. If the two parties are not really interested in the other party, no amount of learning will make a difference. Think about the Israelies and Palistinians.

    Letter: Don't use term 'hearing-impaired'

I've always thought... that the term "hard of hearing" didn't make sense. A more accurate term for my situation is "partially deaf" because I can't hear high frequencies no matter what.

    Senstivity to Sounds

Sounds irritate me! Even though I wear digital HAids, I cannot seem to phase out the loud sounds in an environment. I hate riding on a noisy bus and I hate shopping malls and I hate crowded parties. I also have attention deficit disorder and when there is a loud of noise, I have trouble...

    Grey/white noise

No... I wasn't sick recently, it's just that the noise seems to always be there. Anyway, maybe I should just grin and bear it. (It's far worse when I am really tired.)

    Living in a bubble...

 Another HH person said the feeling of being in a bubble when communicating with the hearing world is only in the mind and that we can do away with it just by thinking it away, that it is all in the way we think! I don't know about you but I definately experience a communication bubble all...

    Grey/white noise

I constantly experience grey (or white noise) and when I take off my hearing aids to sleep, it gets so loud I have a hard time getting to sleep. Sometimes it is in two different pitches, one for each ear! When I out of my apartment I hear all the city background noises so then the grey noise is...

Does anyone know of any connection between hearing impairment and depression. I am not talking about later onset but for lifetime hearing problems. I saw somewhere that stated that there is a higher incidence of depression in the deaf/HH community? any thoughts? I am being treated for major...
