    CI's.....are they that much better??

Cheers for the advice....I have got some pretty good digital BTE's now....had to buy them myself as the NHS were still analogues and cr*p.... I have got an appointment for a new set of digitals on the NHS at the end of Oct... and I started my research on CI's exactly on the basis of...

    hoh and job problem

Why is there a problem??? If you want to exist and operate in the "normal" world, you cannot expect everyone to make special arrangements and have special consideration for you, particularly when you are not making the best efforts you can to mitigate the problem yourself. They didn't have to...

    CI's.....are they that much better??

Sentence discrimination is, like most things, dependent upon circumstances...ambient noise, my concentration on sound, my concentration on something else.... Hearing loss is also a personal perception....I think I am much worse than I was 10 years ago, and my audio says I have approx 50%...

Stem cell therapy may restore hearing to the totally deaf in 50 years

Fantastic!!! Hopefully medical technology will have also advanced so far that I can be fully transplanted into the body of an 18 year old and actually be young enough to have any use to the technique!!! .....oh hang on...... if they can transplant me into a new body...they wouldn't...

    CI's.....are they that much better??

OK.... so the consensus is that CI will deliver a much better clarity and quality of hearing..... I am trying to get a referral from my doctors to a CI programme....to see if other think I am suitable for CI....and that might take some time... I like to have some idea before I go for...

    CI's.....are they that much better??

I would consider myself in the "I can hear just good enough with a HA" section. I reckon I am spot on the hear 80% with HA's. My hearing loss is about 60/75db in both ears. With my HA's in I can get by in most situations, and in really noisy situations I do better than hearies as i can...

    hoh and job problem

However much we want to cuss and curse the "hearies" for their insensitivity to our difficulties, you have at least been honest enough to recognise that you need HA's. It is in some ways, unreasonable to expect people with normal hearing, to remember and adjust their normal way of speaking to...

What is your favorite brand for a hearing aid?

I wear phonak micropower v's..BTE digitals.... before that I had starkey micro in the canals...but ran out of power with them... I would recommend digitals above analogues...when I have a prob with my phonaks...I have to revert to analogue aids for a bit and they just are dire...way too...

    CI's.....are they that much better??

Re Reading the posts as well.... ...if you have a CI....does it not just switch on in the way a HA does then?? Overthepond is describing having frequencies turned on...is this because of your level of deafness prior to CI and you actually have to learn to comprehend a sound itself?? or is...

    CI's.....are they that much better??

I haven't worked out all the technicalities of replying on this forum yet....and there are quite a few comments that are coming in..... I used to wear ITE's..... small one like the starkey micro...but they reached a point where the apmlification was not enough, and rather than go to a bigger...

    CI's.....are they that much better??

This is great stuff..... my hearing loss is about 50/60db in both ears.....so my didgital aids give it a reasonable kick....but its nice to have a conversation with people who understand that just cos you make the sound louder, it doesn't make it easier to hear! .....and so what if you can...

Thanks for the comments.....clearly my auditory nerve suffers damage when I have a few beers....my balance seems to go after a while.....my hearing does as well...but I don't care so much!!!:lol: This will be the start of a period of research for me...trying to find out the effect that...
