Introducing a toddler to ASL (and actually seeing her USE it)??

That's horrible! Why would your dad's wife forbid you from playing with your own sister? Sounds like an evil stepmother to me :(

Introducing a toddler to ASL (and actually seeing her USE it)??

I knew a few deaf children growing up who had diagnoses of autism spectrum disorders, though I (and many of the teachers, interpreters, and speech therapists) doubted that they were accurate. Most of them just weren't exposed to language until a late age because nobody realized that they...

Translating books to ASL to read to children

Simple books, like Dr. Seuss, baby books, books with only one line per page, etc, are easy enough to translate into ASL on cue. Heck, most books that are actually specifically geared for kids under age 2 are no problem. But what about wordier books with a descriptive paragraph on each page...

Introducing a toddler to ASL (and actually seeing her USE it)??

The human brain acquires language best around age 2--that's why toddlers seem to suddenly have a huge boom in the number of words they know/can use. It is best to teach foreign languages before age 6 or so (to become natively fluent). After that, the initial language-learning parts of the...

can u understand sign way too fast?

I knew one girl who fingerspelled (and sometimes signed) so fast that her hand literally blurred and became impossible to read. Try flapping your hand really fast. That's how her signing looked.

Introducing a toddler to ASL (and actually seeing her USE it)??

I'm going to be starting a new nanny job next week. I'm Deaf/hoh and the family is entirely hearing. The two kids that will be in my care are aged 22 months and newborn. Obviously, I want to teach them to sign (this is also part of why they hired me--they are excited to have their kids be...

Do I "need to wear a hearing device while driving"?

I'm applying for a learner's permit, and one of the questions on the application is "Do you need to wear a hearing device while driving?" I'm confused about how to answer this. I do wear a hearing aid most of the time, but I don't need to wear it while driving. People who have less hearing...

    Brokeback Mountain

I'm kind of sick of people only seeing this as a "gay movie." It's a great movie with a touching plot that many people could enjoy or even relate to (regardless of their orientation). I mean, is every movie with Will Smith or Denzel Washington a "black movie"? Are interracial couples the only...

Deaf gay parents: signs for mom/dad

That works, but what about when the kids are babies? Seems like kind of a sophisticated distinction for someone under a year or two old.

Deaf gay parents: signs for mom/dad

For gay parents who have a child, obviously they can't both be called "mom" or "dad," so hearing parents will have "mom" and "mama" or similar...what about Deaf gay parents? I can't think of more than one sign for mom or for dad. :dunno: The only thing I've though of so far is doing something...

    Translation help

Hmm, it's hard to translate an ASL phrase into written English but...: /raised eyebrows/ good action/do /pursed lips, shake head/ *emphasis* guaranteed always (move handshape from 'always' in half circle in front of body, like it is going around and coming back) (use handshape from...

LED light on new Sonic Boom clocks?

The rainbow display is really cool, but unfortunately I'm not really a pink heart kind of girl :P But I'm glad that the company is putting out attractive options for deaf alarm clocks ('bout time!).

LED light on new Sonic Boom clocks?

Actually, I've found that I wake up much better with a light than with a vibrator, but it's still not foolproof unless I have both.

LED light on new Sonic Boom clocks?

I had that same Sonic Boom alarm clock when I was younger (and a lighter sleeper!). But recently the vibrator jack broke and the alarm won't pulse, so if I have a light plugged in it just turns on instead of flashing. That's why I'm buying a new one. I saw the clocks on the HC website, and...

LED light on new Sonic Boom clocks?

I'm a very sound sleeper, so I need both vibration and flashing lights to wake me up. I'm thinking of buying one of the Sonic Boom clocks like the 3rd, 5th, and 7th ones on this site: Alarm Clocks for deaf and hard of hearing If you have used any of these, can you tell me how powerful the...

Deaf/HH Nanny in Washington, DC area

Thank you for the suggestions! I've already contacted the NAD, American Society for Deaf Children, and the community relations dept. at Gallaudet, but no luck finding information so far. I will definitely contact SignNews and KDES about placing a classified ad. Great idea!

Deaf/HH Nanny in Washington, DC area

Hi Shel90, Are you looking for a babysitter or a full-time nanny? I live in DC and I don't have a car or license, so the commute to Baltimore would only be possible if you were near a MARC train stop. This is a lot of travel for just one babysitting job, plus I don't know exactly how long it...

oh dear, WHERE can I find...?

I live in Washington, DC and I've recently started looking for a job as a nanny. I'd love it if I found a Deaf family or family with deaf children so that communication wouldn't be an issue, but I have NO idea where to look! I've contacted the NAD and Gallaudet's community relations person, but...
