Quarrel Over Deaf Education Flares Again

I like the full toolbox idea. Why not just accept whatever works for a particular person? We're not all cookie cutter gingerbread people; what works for one kid may not work for another. I don't understand the whole EITHER/OR dichotomy when it comes to speech and sign. Why not both? Why not see...

I've been told ASL is "going out"?

^ It's always interesting to me how much some people want to limit other people by always saying "you can't do this, you can't do that." I think they're just afraid of how successful you just might be.

    Combined name signs?

Thanks for the answers guys. I think this is just one person's opinion in my area. Anyway Lily (OP), I was re-reading your first post and I think you don't have a combined name sign. Arbitrary means that it's like, on your chest or just out in space, which has nothing to do with any of your...

Quarrel Over Deaf Education Flares Again

This is really interesting. I was just at ISD for a workshop and a lot of the people there were talking about this issue. I agree with Tami- the Deaf should have more of a say in this one.

I've been told ASL is "going out"?

^ Agree 100%. Like the counselor would know, given that she doesn't even use the language. Egghead.

    How do you sign...

Umm... I beg to differ with you. You can say would/should/could. Would is usually glossed as the sign WILL. There's an English sign that's a W-->D for would (essentially an intialized Will sign). Not used very often in these parts, but I do see it. Should is the same sign as Need, just with more...

    Say vs Hearing in ASL?

I'm not sure what they did, but there is definitely a difference, at least in my area. HEARING is the index that rolls in front of the chin. SAY is the index fingertip tapping on the chin, and SPEAK is the 5 handshape with the side of the index touching the chin. All different signs...

Are deaf kids bullied/harrassed more frequently than hearing kids in mainstream?

^ I agree. I am very sorry to hear that, Faded Rose. I am not deaf, but I was always the outsider looking in when I was growing up. All of the friends I had at one time or another betrayed me. I felt the exact same way as you; why bother having friends who are just going to betray and backstab...

    Language Acquisition, Food for Thought

This is absolutely fascinating. The second paragraph just goes to reinforce the idea that hearing people who really want to become fluent ASL users MUST go to Deaf events and become immersed. I would say that some of the best terps are those that really had a great grasp of English structure and...

Sign for Prom from show Switched at Birth

Hey all, interesting that this came up! I live in the area of St. Rita's school for deaf and have always been told that it is a St. Rita's sign. People from St. Rita's around here use that sign; others who did not go to school there tend to FS it. lol around here, St. Rita's has their own sign...

    ASL Idiom Question

Strong Deaf is an English translation of that idiom. Really it could be DEAF STRONG, which to me like Arthaey said, means they are Super ASL and proud of their culture. STRONG can also be used to say someone looks like something; like if someone looks just like his dad, you can say HIS DAD...

    ASL Students See Deaf Perspective

I would also add that Deaf teachers are great because they are usually well vetted and respected by the community at large. They can teach both the accepted standard sign and any local regional variant, as well as slang. And they're great to hang out with! Typically they are willing to go to...

Can hearing people be culturally Deaf?

^ Wow, he sounds bitter about life in general. I think spouses/partners of culturally Deaf people can become culturally Deaf if they are heavily involved in the community and use Sign. I have known Deaf women whose husbands are hearing and NEVER LEARN TO SIGN! Definitely not culturally Deaf at...

    Hello

You know that they have programs in Kentucky to learn ASL. I am from that area and can suggest some really great resources depending on where you live in KY. Also want to mention that the NAD conference will be there soon. PS Welcome! :)

    Why are you deaf?

I guess that's true, now that you mention it. In my experience, I've never asked it in order to gossip about the person based on their answer. As I said, it's usually a topic that comes up sooner or later if I've never met someone. Generally speaking, they're the one who brings it up. But I...

I've been invited to go to the Open house at state school for the deaf

Go and enjoy yourself! Remember that open houses generally mean lots of parents who don't sign... You never know unless you go. :)

Can hearing people be culturally Deaf?

I think CODAs can be for sure, if their parents are culturally Deaf. Just because your parents have a hearing loss though doesn't make you culturally deaf. I know of a CODA whose parents are not actively involved in the community; I would not personally consider him culturally deaf. That being...

    Combined name signs?

I think quick, short names (usually with LY like Kelly, Molly, etc.) are usually FS. That also goes for men with names like Tom, Mark, Bob. Those are usually FS in this area. I have a question about name signs for the community here. I heard from Deaf that women who are single cannot have...

what behaviors show hearing has a good attitude at Deaf Event

I agree with everything said. Deaf can tell through just a few pleasant exchanges both your attitude and signing level. I myself can usually gauge by how someone fingerspells their name... Not sure if this is common, but you can usually tell by how fluid someone's fingerspelling of common words...
