my ex roommate say to me...

I did reconsider the use of using the word "Deaf" several times, but in the end I left it in. It is true that some deaf and hoh people speak "normally", at least from a hearing, native English speaking person's pespective. It is also true that some deaf and hoh people are not native English...

Making small talk with hearing strangers

I now work in a local grocery store, and I often get older hoh customers. I am ALWAYS willing to repeat, step closer, rephrase, everything. One checker I work with gets annoyed when she has to repeat, and asked me how I have patience for the "deaf old people". I pointed to my h-a, smiled, and...

my ex roommate say to me...

... He is Deaf. His written language is not the same as yours. Big deal. ASL is COMPLETELY different from written/spoken English. Word order, grammar, syntax, everything different. This is his voice on this forum. I think my post must sound funny to him. No judgement.

    one ear dragging you down?

I'll wear both for school, but even then I usually have one ear on the FM for the teacher, and the other doing over time trying to make sense of the rest of the classroom. Sometimes it's easier to just try to go without it, because I can focus on sounds better. Other things (like sports), I also...

    Refused audiogram printout- UK NHS

Whenever I go see my audi I ask for a printout of my audiogram at the front desk when I'm scheduling my next appointment. I then take this to my school's TotD so she can keep it in my file and know where I am :D They also never charge us for it.

    YouTube or Website Info

What everyone else has said is right. It's great. But I think a good solution? Give them the URL to AllDeaf.com. They might begin to understand where you're coming from, also the challenges an hoh/D person can experience, and get a taste of hoh/D life.

    Piercing

As I said, wasn't too bad. Also, that's kinda what I'm concerned about D: If you look at the pic, you'll see that the top coil that comes around to the front of my ear is actually just where the ball ends (the piercer adjusted it so it looks like I got 4 holes done, lol) so if I have to I can...

    Piercing

Firebrand, I'm sure you can find a piercer that will help you find appropriate, allergy-safe jewelry. You're from PA. :D

    Everything about iPhone

I'm looking into getting an iTouch, mainly because of the hoh/D apps I've been reading about :D Imagine having that subtitle app at the movies!! Or even in class when my teacher has once again neglected to get the captioned video. I'm thinking this could be a cool thing. And now that I have a...

Also, we could probably get this BUMPED to Parenting or the more specific relationship thread.

    Seperation/Divorce

The parents of any child with any disability seem to have an increased rate of divorce or separation. My main medical problems (unrelated to hearing loss) were pretty much taken care of (at least the immediate effects) when I was young, before I developed any memories. I still attended yearly...

who else has had thier HAs run over by a car????

Never had it run over, though I know I've dropped them (both inside and outside) before, as well as accidentally left them in my jeans (they were in my jeans because i didn't have a case when walking home from school in the rain, thought jeans would keep them safe :D of course, came home and...

    Piercing

Haha thanks :D It wasn't too bad. Everyone expected me to give up after the first needle lol. I didn't know what to expect it to feel like at first, and still can't explain it. It hurt. I was basically grabbing my pant leg/shoe the entire time :D The third one hurt the worst, though, because I...

    Piercing

UPDATE: OK, so went to the piercing studio. Decided on a triple helix/twister/corkscrew/spiral-type piercing. After finally getting the jewelry, went back to the studio. The piercer was very nice and knowledgeable. She asked if I could hear her without it (when she was doing the piercing) etc...

    So, new earmolds.. Help!?

Thanks everyone for the advice, specially Botte for the pics!! I think I might know someone with one of these, so we'll see if she'll help me, and maybe look into ordering one. For now, still using the old molds. :ty: everyone!

    So, new earmolds.. Help!?

Can you upload a pic, by chance? Maybe we have something here. I doubt it, but then again, we have tons of jewelry/watchmaking stuff.. lol

    So, new earmolds.. Help!?

Got new earmolds today. I guess I overestimated my abilities/assumed this whole thing would be easy, and instead of getting them fit, just picked them up with uncut tubing. Mistakee. So now I'm stuck trying to figure out cutting the tubing, but also making the tubing stretch to hug the earhook...

Did u almost lost your HAs?

Well, never lost them for too long. I always seem to panic when I can't find them, then find them neglected somewhere:P I had a scary ziplining experience (first time, short ride). I was nervous before going, but got strapped in and all that. We went in a line (like 20+) so we took turns...

    Loudness

Also, about the lipreading... I don't know about anyone else, but I found that I picked this up as my hearing got worse. The first time I realized this my audiologist noticed that I kept watching her lips. Since then I think my teachers have noticed that if I'm in a small group situation or a...

    Loudness

Yes, the hearing aid increases volume, but as pointed out, it does little to aid clarity. Additionally, at least for me, sometimes I don't trust my hearing aids. I think of the world in two different volumes: "Real" Volume: AKA the volume at which hearing people hear/speak, and "Deaf"...
