    Signing without lipreading

I can understand signing just fine if I can read lips as people are signing. But of course with true ASL, there is very little English mouthing. Any tips on how to improve reading real ASL?

    Deaf intuition?

I'm curious how many Deaf can recognize that another person is Deaf even if that person is not signing. Is it in the eyes? The mouth? Something else?

    How to improve receptive skills?

Wow. What made you keep going? Were people patient with you, or did people avoid you because they knew you didn't understand them and they didn't want to have to repeat everything?

    Sign for "dildo?"

Ha. :-) Personally, I'd prefer to see a signer use classifiers... lol

    Sign for "dildo?"

A student in my ASL class gave a presentation recently on sexual terms, and signed dildo as FAKE+PENIS. While I understand why, I'm wondering if there is a more lesbian-centric or feminist sign for it? Preferably one that doesn't use the signs FAKE or PENIS, because there's nothing fake...

    How do you sign...

I'm wondering how to sign ASTROLOGY. ASTRONOMY is STAR+STUDY, so perhaps STAR+STUDY, then fs-ASTROLOGY? Or, if astrology is the stars' effect on personality, emotions, etc., perhaps STAR+STUDY WHAT? PERSONALITY, EMOTION??? Guessing here...any sage advice? :-)

    Accent marks?

Ok, so you would just draw a line over the vowel, then? :)

    Accent marks?

If you are fingerspelling a name or place with an accent mark, such as Denée or Bogotá, do you omit the accent, or is there a way to indicate one?

    Reverse audism, cont'd

PFH, I have no idea who first came up with it. I enjoy your posts and I'm glad you want to continue this discussion. Word Is What I Define... - YouTube -A blogger from the UK defines Deafism as Deaf against Deaf, and reverse audism as Deaf against hearing: Intellectual debate on Deaf...

    Reverse audism, cont'd

Hi PFH - I had seen the word "Deafism" in other posts, here and in the blogosphere. I did not coin it. I have absolutely no malice towards the Deaf community...I am attempting in my small way to understand and be a part of it.

    Reverse audism, cont'd

The thread was closed before I could respond. Frisky Feline, I looked at the friend and made some sort of frantic "interpret" sign combined with spoken "Will you??" Thanks for your support. It was a very painful experience.

Crack the myth: Reverse Audism does NOT exist.

Deafism: I attended a Deaf camp to learn sign language. While there, I had an allergic reaction to something. A Deaf staffer came over to me with a hearing friend who is bilingual. The staffer asked me what was going on and I tried to sign but not being able to think, walk, sign, or breathe made...

    Signing whilst singing

I love performers who sign (e.g., Sean Forbes, TL Forsberg) but I know that some Deaf people don't understand them because it's not ASL. Is it possible to sign in pure ASL whilst singing? I am told that it is difficult or impossible to sign ASL whilst speaking English. But for a song that one...

    Audism and Deafism

Reviving an old thread... I've been doing some reading on the subject, and I came up with a continuum just now. What do you think? 5. Audism - outright discrimination of D/deaf people because of their deafness, lack of English fluency, etc. 4. Phonocentrism - Preference for auditory...

How come they can use phone?

I hate the cold, tinny sound of cell phone reception (I don't have a landline) and the lack of non-verbal communication. I would much rather see someone to communicate, although I usually just use the VP to talk to friends, not strangers or businesses. If I had to use it for everything, or with...
