I can understand signing just fine if I can read lips as people are signing. But of course with true ASL, there is very little English mouthing. Any tips on how to improve reading real ASL?

Wow. What made you keep going? Were people patient with you, or did people avoid you because they knew you didn't understand them and they didn't want to have to repeat everything?

A student in my ASL class gave a presentation recently on sexual terms, and signed dildo as FAKE+PENIS. While I understand why, I'm wondering if there is a more lesbian-centric or feminist sign for it? Preferably one that doesn't use the signs FAKE or PENIS, because there's nothing fake...

I'm wondering how to sign ASTROLOGY. ASTRONOMY is STAR+STUDY, so perhaps STAR+STUDY, then fs-ASTROLOGY? Or, if astrology is the stars' effect on personality, emotions, etc., perhaps STAR+STUDY WHAT? PERSONALITY, EMOTION??? Guessing here...any sage advice? :-)

Hi PFH - I had seen the word "Deafism" in other posts, here and in the blogosphere. I did not coin it. I have absolutely no malice towards the Deaf community...I am attempting in my small way to understand and be a part of it.
