New! Hearing with interest in deaf culture

Hey, Alison. Trippy, here. First, welcome to AllDeaf! You'll find many things here. :) Second, could you give me tips on talking to hearing people? The barrier I've oft run into headfirst on their side is impatience/irritation at having to modify communication. So, I've ceased trying to do so...

When people say "this is awkward"

For an HoH persn, I am very well-spoken. I enunciate, I listen, and I am friendly.. As for what they meant, they would not elaborate much. I asked if the silence was what was awkward, and they were very vague in their reply (I would specify if I could remember how exactly they responded) but...

When people say "this is awkward"

The person in question had said it during a moment neither of us was talking.. I'm guessing either that silence makes her feel awkward, or I did. I don't recall much of what transpired, though I do recall that I had been avoiding anything personal, and tried to liven up the conversation by...

When people say "this is awkward"

But what of? Why do people even say it? I feel directness is a better approach. I'd rather be a tad hurt than angry about vagueness, as vague remarks don't touch upon an issue, but rather avoid it completely. Anyway; considerate and sensitive of what, exactly?

Is there anybody else who is attending GU in the fall? I want to make a few friends before I begin my time there. I'm HoH, 22, friendly, and accepting of everyone. Prefer positive energy and spontaneity, so if that's you, pm me (: P.S.: I am learning ASL and growing more comfortable with it...

When people say "this is awkward"

I'm just jaded by all of the people who drop off, that I'd hoped would stick around for awhile, after meeting. Feh

When people say "this is awkward"

Doesn't make it any easier, that I have no friends. Granted, I would like a few, but just don't want hearie friends. since I live in a hearie community, *shrugs* **** it.

    I Don't Understand.. :C

Glad I am not the only one who faces these things.. I know people talk about me behind my back, but I gave up trying to change that a long time ago, as people give me bs excuses and brush it off.. I'm glad you don't keep your sister close. That kind of treatment from a sibling (or anybody) is...

When people say "this is awkward"

When what they really want to say is, "I don't want to talk to you anymore." Perhaps I'm used to bluntness, but it really frustrates me when people beat around the bush without coming right out and saying what they really want to say. Anybody else face this recently?

Hey grace, I've been through the same thing. I wear earplugs to block my residual hearing and establish myself as deaf, as trying to hear is too much of a struggle. I will be your friend (: just pm me or Skype me at in_over_my_head18 , I'd be pleased to assist you and support you.
