Are you a leftie or a rightie?

I dunno. I think it worked out differently. I have a photographic memory, so unless I actually SEE it, my brain tosses it out my other ear.

    Deaf meme

Lol! I love this post! I've gotten the same question from several people that I know, ever since I started school "so you're learning to read braille?" :pissed:Every time I hear it, i wanna go "No. I'm learning to flap my hands like this" -proceeds to wildly flail hands and arms in the air-

What Do Hearing Ask About Deaf?

I quite literally lol'd when I read that, but we're not all that bad. Ignorance runs deep in humanity, and after all, we're all human, right? although, I will admit, being asked what it's like to be part black, and be part white, at the same time gets pretty old after a bit. Trust me, I know how...

A funny moment in ASL 1 class

So we're going over vocabulary words and such (clothing this week), and my professor (Deaf) is explaining to a girl in the class that the sign for 'socks' is directed down, not up. Up means 'stars', and he signs it for us to see the difference: 'socks', 'stars', 'socks', 'stars'. I look over to...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Thank you so much for your encouragement. My mom and I were talking the other day about my dad, about how he was near the end of his life. As it turns out, he was losing his hearing. He'd lost half-his sight in both eyes, and one of his strokes had started to affect his hearing. He went through...

Dealing With Idiots Who Ask for Rude Signs

Actually, I think that's a great way to accomplish a couple of things. 1) Help them appreciate your language (to a degree, I mean there's only so much you can expect from 'dip-shits' like them) 2)Help them realize that they really are abusing your language. (y'never know.) I knew a guy who kept...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Not saying at all that the Deaf are at a disadvantage, and my answer to your question would be neither of the ones you posted. In the last few years I've been through a lot of transitions, dealt with huge changes: from engaged to single, from having a little sister to having a little sister...

hearing but willing to learn asl!

Thank ya! ^_^ Sorry It's been a while since I've been on the forums. Life's been NUTS! My ASL and deaf culture professors are Deaf, so that's a HUGE! bonus :) I worry about going to deaf events though. I get so many mixed signals about hearing people and interpreters. I gotta say it's...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

As much as I'd like to, I think the Deaf should be the ones to teach their language. I have Deaf professors in my training course/degree course/whatever you wanna call it, and I honestly don't think I could learn ASL better from anyone hearing. And I'd feel the same way about any other language...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

I agree, and unless I went deaf myself that would be hard to effectively do. I look at it, though, from the perspective that the transition from hearing to deaf is a life transition, a big one. We go through a lot of transitions. Some from rich to broke, some dirt poor to doin alright, some...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

I'm so glad I found this thread Lately, I've been thinking about how hard the transition is, to go from hearing to deaf later in life. No one really hears about it, or at least no one I know of. I'm fully hearing, with one hoh friend, so I can't imagine what it would be like going through that...
