    got the hearing aids today

There aren't many resources in this area. Our hospital has an ASL interpreter on call, but has never used her. The Deaf community here seems pretty non-existent. The one thing we have going for us is that my aunt is an ASL interpreter. She lives over an hour away, but has been sending us...

new and with questions from a mom.

Congratulations on your new little one. The newborn screen is how we found our daughter's hearing loss as well. They told us that its very, very common for the test not to work right, and for non-issue things to cause the false reading- and that is true. So, that is in your favor. For...

    got the hearing aids today

They're not sure yet what kind of hearing loss she has. The ABR did not show any response at all for the frequencies and decibels tested. She doesn't mind the aids being in- she acts like she doesnt even know they are there. So far, I haven't noticed much. I thought she turned her head...

    got the hearing aids today

My 3 month old daughter got her hearing aids today. They said they may or may not work for her. I haven't really noticed any difference yet. Anything anyone would look for besides the obvious startling, etc.

Good ASL learning tools, adult + 3 month old

I'll be here, hunkered down in the snow storm until about 2pm. Forgive my ignorance, but what is a TOD? I work in the medical field, and I sometimes rattle off terms or abbreviations and get puzzled looks from my patients. Now I'm getting a dose of my own medicine.

Good ASL learning tools, adult + 3 month old

You know, I should call them today, not much else going on. I'm a little ambiguous about what to expect from them though, and what to ask for.

Good ASL learning tools, adult + 3 month old

My 3 month old daughter is deaf. I would like to learn ASL, and teach it to her as well. I have been unable to find any live ASL education offerings close to home so I'm curious what other tools / programs people might have seen used successfully. Someone donated a baby sign book and video...

    My daughter is deaf

They did the brainwave test under sedation. The max they could go to was 90db for an infant. 90db had no brainwave response at all. In a year they said they could go higher- above 100 and see what happens. I'm not sure where that puts her. Based on these results I guess its unclear whether...

    My daughter is deaf

Life is too short for grief. She's so happy and bright eyed, she's certainly not going to grieve. However, I do feel like I've got a thousand different directions I could go with absolutely no clue which of them are worth exploring. Thanks for everyone's comments, I still feel overwhelmed...

    My daughter is deaf

Thanks Dgirl. It looks like Iowa is fairly well represented around here. And thanks for the links KristinaB & DD. We're kind of in a fog and every bit of insight is useful!

    My daughter is deaf

My wife and I are hearing, but our beautiful and happy 3 month old daughter is deaf. We just found out last week. Neither of us have really any experience with the deaf or sign, certainly not deaf children. We'll be poking around here a bit, I think.
